They’re outside, and loud, and having fun… for some reason this bugs you? A high five is obnoxious? You have something against a group giving out positive reinforcement?
How, particularly, should someone express their exultation derived from riding some rapids with their friends? I really can’t see how yelling “Dude, that was AWESOME!” and giving a high five is anything less than the called for response when you’ve just come through some white water.
If you want to be quietly contemplative, that’s your right, but you seem to want the rivers and mountains more to yourself than the people you’re complaining about do.
Hey, thanks for your comment, I know we could get into a nice argument about the values, virtues and rights of different outdoor enthusiast attitudes. But I’m not going to. If you wanted to start your own thread in Great Debates that would be cool. But for now, I’m just looking for Humble Opinions on a descriptive title that I could use.
So, guys who don’t whoop and yell are pussies? If so, we have an insult directed at several people in the thread. Don’t do it again.
Unless this is a play on words we’re missing. I thought a netpussy might be someone who threatens and bullies people online, but is a wimp IRL. But I’m not about to go googling for net pussy.

I never felt one way or other about the sort of extreme enthusiasts the OP is talking about. But about ten years ago it did seem like the whole “X-” thing was being overly hyped in the course of all sorts of marketing and advertisements. It seemed like every other product aimed at the under-30 crowd tried to work “x” into its product name or ads.
Well, yeah, but there is a mindset that spawned that trend that some people seem to really subscribe to. It has a super-competative one-upping edge that goes along with it. And it is all celebrated without question. One guy scales El Capitan with just his nipples in 17 hours, so the next guy has to do it with just his eyelashes while asleep in just 4 minutes. And National Geographic puts them on the cover. Really? I mean, Really?
Just noticed my first ever mod note. Apologies to all. I misunderstood the OP and responded defensively as a whitewater kayaker. I felt like all participants in challenging outdoor adventures were being called asses when really it was just the ones that get excited about it. I must confess though, after successfully completion of a tough stretch of whitewater by me or others in my group I have been known to whoop, yell and high five.
My response was inappropriate.
In all seriousness, remember that personal insults aren’t allowed in this forum. What does and doesn’t constitute a personal insult (i.e. aimed at other posters) isn’t always 100% clear, please consider the context. Here we seem to have a “pro-whooping, pro-yelling” party opposite an “anti-whooping, anti-yelling” party, so if you direct epithets at anyone who holds the opposite view, it could be construed as an insult directed at the other posters.
A high five or single exclamation after a hard run or climb is one thing. I think the OP is getting at the ones that are whooping about it on the bus on the way there. The ones that are acting as if they are the only ones that do outdoor things at all. As far as I know, the professional climbers do not act this way.
You’ll be pleased to know that people in the third world find extreme sports, dangerous adventure seeking westerners completely outside their ability to comprehend.
It’s not the money spent, or equipment required, the physical endurance, that amazes them, it’s that people would put their lives and bodies at risk for amusement. People in the third world are painfully aware, every day of their lives, they could suffer an injury that could put their families into the streets as beggars. This while working dangerous jobs in frightening conditions. They are just trying to get through intact and hear a people who want for nothing willing risking so much.
I was often asked about this, and never quite knew how to explain. “Don’t they have children? Wives? Parents?”
Me too? Like I didn’t listen? I posted before you came in and said anything.
Not to argue or anything, but expressing a rude opinion on whoopers and yellers is not even particularly close to expressing a rude opinion about those who have a different opinion on whoopers and yellers. They are two different groups.
