# Name my book club

I’ve recently stopped complaining about not being able to find a book club and just started my own. I do think we need a cool name, though. I’m really bad at these types of things and could use some suggestions. I’m thinking we need a name with more of a literary slant rather than any reference to the actual members of the group (which will hopefully let us all avoid any names like “B_tches Who Read" or "Shakespeare’s S_uts”).
Any thoughts? I’m not sure what the winner would get - maybe we’ll get t-shirts made or you can be an honorary (virtual) member of the club.
I’m looking forward to some witty responses.

We picked a name for ours…and have always called it “bookclub.” Its called “bookclub” when we get together to garden or sing karaoke or go to Vegas.

You could explain that (a) it’s a name that grabs people’s attention and thus attracts more members (yuk, yuk), and (b) what your club cares about most is digging down to the essence - the birthday suit, if you will - of the book.
Or you could just take off your clothes.
Either way, it’s a good name.

OK, my bookclub is fifteen years running. I started it. I thought we needed a name. So I took it to the club and all these really bright women I love came up with names. And for some reason, mostly the group dynamics, we ended up with a stupid name (it had to do with what people were into at the time - at that point we weighted a little Pagan/Feminist - we’ve outgrown that - the most Pagan Feminist - and the instigator of the name, moved out of town a dozen years ago - she’s still Pagan Feminist - we now weight to middle aged suburban/urban moms with liberal religions and feminist leanings).
In other words, bookclub names are like tattoos by committee - cool at the time, hope you don’t regret it (why is the Chinese character for “boxed lunch” on my ankle?) Hopefully your bookclub will be around long enough that you think whatever name you came up with is stupid. Then you can just call it “bookclub.”
(Though I do like Wine Club.)

I started a book club in college and we named it the Doctor T. J. Eckleburg Book Society. We figured it would be a good way to screen potential members… if they picked up on the reference, they were a shoe-in 🙂
