# Name my Kitten!

Yesterday, quite unexpectedly, I became the owner of an adorable black part-manx kitten. His name is tentatively “Under”, but I’m not quite sold on it.
I want to give him an unusual, but not silly name. Lifting from literature is good, but taking a name that’s already been a well known cat’s name is no good. Schroedinger, Pixel, Captain Blood, and Mirror are all out. And I don’t want anything too obvious either, so no Night, Blackie, Dusk, Shadow or anything like that.
What say the Teeming Millions?

well we always named our cats kitty…but we’re weird.

You could name him Trollie. Then when he chases yarn, you could make inane jokes about trolling. And you could laugh to yourself about remembering to feed the troll. Since trolls do live under ground, this name would link to his current temporary handle.

Pryde. Obscure but feline related (Shadowcat) and semi-literary.
Or if you really love cats you can callit Snark (seconding the Lewis Carrol reference). It would make you a snarkhunter and your cat a metaphor for happiness.

I’m of the opinion that most all cats have unusual names, so there for, the unusual become the usual. I’d go for a completely normal name, like Jack (Blackjack?). Then you could say things like “Jack puked in my shoes.” or “I woke up and Jack was sleeping on my face.” Makes for a good doubletake.

How about “Cerberus,” if you want to go literary?
I know, I know, Cerberus was a dog. And he had three heads. But hey…cats are closely associated with hell-related issues, and if “Under” is one of your choices, “Cerberus” kinda fits.

I have quite a store of names for black kittens: Loki, Damien, Satan, Hades, Pluto, Memnoch, LaCroix, Mephistocales (sp? - I have to look that up if I ever use if), Vader, Logan, Mordred, to list a few.
Is there a story behind “Under” that might inspire other suggestions?
