How about Antonia Bird? I absolutely hated Priest but I think it would qualify as a capital-A art film. I think she made up for the rest of her career by directing Ravenous, though. I really love that movie.
Leni Riefenstahl’s the best female director whose films I’ve seen.
And Liv Ullman’s getting better and better.
