When I was young I surly never would have thought would be a day when I actually liked watching _Nova_ on PBS. When I was in high school that was like the boring show our science teacher would make us watch sometimes.

For that matter, I like listening to NPR. Ok, I liked _Car Talk_ when I was young. But now I enjoy listening to _All Things Considered_.

Also this. When I was in college women over 30 seemed _old_ and not attractive to me. Now women under 30 seem _young_, and not attractive to me because I basically think of them as almost children.

We had a thread a few years ago along the lines of “You know you’re getting older when …”

My contribution was roughly

> When you see a college-aged woman sitting with or yakking with somebody who’s evidently her Mom, and you think about hitting on Mom.

That first happened a long time ago for me.

Why the change?
I need to make some oatmeal raisin cookies. Should I be looking for Dried Grapes at the store?

From the source of all knowledge, [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prune):

> In 2001, plum growers in the United States were authorized by the Food and Drug Administration to call prunes “dried plums”. Due to a perception that prunes relieve constipation (perceived as derogatory), some distributors stopped using the word “prune” on packaging labels in favor of “dried plums”.

It must be old movies, and radio classics. I’m listening to Radio Classics (RC) on SXM and I’m loving the old cowboy shows, mysteries, and dramas. Spooky stories are on every day right now. Boris Karloff Vincent Price Hitchcock. Fun stuff to listen to.

I can’t stomach the RC variety shows though. Burns and Allen. That voice of hers. Sheesh! But some tv serials are ok.

I live with 4 seasons also and I remember when I was a younger adult I’d always say, “I could never live somewhere that doesn’t get snow at Christmas.” I have come to the realization that I could. It wouldn’t bother me in the least if I never saw snow again. We had a record amount of snow last year - that nearly sent me over the edge.

My first thought was “is she… flirting with me?”. I’m not a creep, I didn’t attempt to flirt back, but for a second I admit I smugly thought “still got it”.
>
> Then the truth hit me-- she was almost certainly being so nice not because she considered me an attractive older man, but a harmless, kindly old grandpa type

I get this when I’m out running. I’ll be puffing along at my twelve-minute-per-mile pace, and get passed by some fleet-footed, clean-limbed young Artemis who will smile and say, “Looking good!” or “Keep it up!” I realized after that happened a few times that I’ve become an _inspiration_; the old duffer that makes the younglings say, “Bless his heart, he’s still out there pounding away, at his age.” It’s disheartening. They call me “sir”. That’s what’s wrong with this generation, they don’t show any disrespect.

Lousy well-behaved kids these days. Why, back in my day, when an old man yelled at me to get off his lawn, it’s not because I was innocently playing on it, it’s because I was doing donuts on it, like a normal youngster!\*

**Slippers!** Up until about 10 years ago, the first thing I did when I got home was to take off my shoes and socks. I was always barefoot around the house. Then at one point, I’m not sure when or why, I discovered the comfort of slippers during the cold weather months. (I wear flip-flops in the house during the summer.) I found the perfect pair, last year at Amazon and just purchased another pair as back-ups. I hate the kind that are backless. I have to grip the bottoms with my toes so they don’t fall off when I go upstairs! Mine are knitted material, fluffy pile lining and rubber soles. 😍

Just sitting around remembering. I can spend a blissful hour thinking about when Celtling was little and all the fun we had, and how close we were. I doubt there will ever be a happier time in my life to come. That sounds maudlin, but it isn’t. I was so blessed, and I know it.

Badminton. Actually I thought it was a recreation for old people and young children, IOW people who couldn’t handle tennis yet or anymore.

Nothing wrong with tennis, and I’d probably still be playing tennis if I knew anyone who I could hit the ball around with. But I can set up a badminton net in my yard, which makes it a hell of a lot more convenient than tennis.

I currently enjoy multiple levels in a house, with the main bedroom upstairs. And I have a loft office over that.

That’s gonna have to change. When we move, we want everything on one level.

Yes, single-story homes. A lot of retirees from up north move to NC thinking, “Wow! Just 45 minutes from the big city, I can find or build a McMansion on four or five acres for a fraction of what I sold my house in CT for!” Three years later, they are looking for something smaller and closer to town.

It took my wife some time to find a traditional ranch-style house in Raleigh, but she finally got one. Two steps up from the carport, four steps at the front porch, flat and level driveway, all bathrooms and laundry on the same level, and hardly any snow to clear. I’m deeply grateful.

The other thing I appreciate is my RAV4. We don’t have any kids here and it’s not like we drive a lot, but it is so sweet to slide my butt into a seat that is just a couple inches different in height from my natural standing position. My 71 YO best buddy just bought a hybrid Accord. Getting in and out of that was like climbing into and out of a well.

Yes! One back surgery and two bad knees makes me thankful for the proliferation of mid-sized SUVs. When I was young I dreamed of owning an expensive sports car. Now when I see them I think how even if I could get in one I would never be able to get out.

Another vote for this car style. We own two, and each of our 3 kids has one. I can’t remember the last time I rode in a sedan.
