Bonus points if you can rattle off the entire title without referring back to the book. 😃

John Clay = also known as Spaulding, one-time antagonist of Sherlock Holmes in _The Red-Headed League_:

[QUOTE=Sir Arthur Conan Doyle]

“I beg that you will not touch me with your filthy hands,” remarked our prisoner as the handcuffs clattered upon his wrists. “You may not be aware that I have royal blood in my veins. Have the goodness, also, when you address me always to say ‘sir’ and ‘please.’ ”

“All right,” said Jones with a stare and a snigger. “Well, would you please, sir, march upstairs, where we can get a cab to carry your Highness to the police-station?”

Exactly how much of a geek am I? 😃

I just checked the Elric Saga, and as of the beginning, Sadric has been “dead a year”. Elric is indeed referred to as the Emperor.

(One can nitpick that it’s Melniboné, not Melnibone, but that’s another story.)

🙂 President of Thiscountry, as recounted in Avram Davidson’s 1962 short story, “The Singular Events Which Occurred in the Hovel in the Alley off of Eye Street.” “It was the year that the dragons were so bad . . .” John IV does not actually appear as a character, but the story begins with his coronation, including the spectacle of the Veep riding his palomino back and forth, proclaiming, “Whosoever denies that John Fitz-Kenneth is rightful president of Thiscountry lies, and is an SOB.”
