I think the stripclubs in town would give you enough names to compile a short lists:

Rhinos
Crazy Horses
Cheetahs
Sapphires
Flashdancers (maybe not :D)

Interesting that Kansas City is not on the list, I thought it was on the new NHL location short-list for a while.

Kansas City built the Sprint Center in the hopes of landing an NHL or NBA franchise. So what happens now is when a team wants a new arena, they use a threat of moving to KC as blackmail to get what they want.

In the meantime, the Sprint Center has become one of most-booked concert venues in the country, so at this point the city probably doesn’t even care if they get a sports franchise in there.

Keep in mind that, if the NHL Commissioner wants it, it would be illegal to bet on any NHL game involving the Vegas team, or any game (for example, the All-Star Game) held in Vegas. Note that the Silverton casino already does not take bets on any NHL games, as one of its owners is also part of the LA Kings’ ownership.

It’s not clear if the law applies to, say, futures bets on a Vegas team winning the Stanley Cup (it refers to “events”), although a similar situation prevents any Caesar’s group casino from taking futures bets on the Celtics winning the NBA title (if the Celtics do win, they pay off on the team they beat in the NBA Finals).

> I don’t doubt that Toronto is big enough to support two teams, but where would the second team draw its support from? How will they build a fan base? Torontonians are already dedicated Maple Leafs fans, what will make a Maple Leafs fan abandon the team (if decades of bad play couldn’t make them do that already)? Would you make some sort of regional split, create a suburban team? That sort-of worked out for the Mets (who actually had a built-in fan base made of fans of the Dodgers and Giants), Jets and Islanders in New York, but the Jets and Islanders are clearly second citizens to the Giants and Rangers in their metro area (and the regional separation has now broken down somewhat as well).
>
> I really don’t get how there’s any reasonable expectation of success.

This is a problem. I can’t think of any city with 2 of the same sports team where there isn’t an obvious “A team” and “B team”. The Mets are clearly the B team for baseball in New York, with the Yankees being the A team. In basketball, LA has the Lakers (A team) and the Clippers (B team).

After a quick look at the NHL teams, I’m struck by how the Maritime Provinces don’t have a pro hockey team. Why don’t they give a team to Halifax, instead of creating the Toronto Second Fiddles?

That’s true enough, but I still think they’d like one. They just have the security of knowing they don’t need to offer billionaires sweetheart deals to land one or else they’re stuck with a white elephant.

Tiny, tiny population. Halifax, the largest metro in the Maritimes, has half the population of Winnipeg, the least populous metro that currently has an NHL team.

Also, in NY it seems there’s no “cross pollination” of fandom. It goes:

Yankees/Giants/Rangers

Mets/Jets/Islanders

IOW You won’t normally find Yankee fans who are Jets fans

As this map shows, the Jets have one county in the whole country where they dominate, according to Facebook. That county would be Queens, where they used to play. Before they moved to New Jersey, they would have been the majority on Long Island as well. They are definitely the second citizens of NY.

BTW, I am Jet fan ☹

Even going back to before the AFL-NFL merger, the upstart AFL (Jets) was always the B league to the NFL (Giants).

That’s exactly what they’re looking at doing, maybe in Markham (northish of Toronto centre) or Hamilton (southwest at the end of Lake Ontario). Hamilton (or somewhere in that general direction), in my opinion, would be better; a team in that heavily populated area could easily suck up fans from southwestern Ontario who can’t get to downtown Toronto.
