I have friends who have a dog named Fred Thompson, and I thought that a dog with a last name is kind of cool. So I’m thinking of naming my next dog Jack Casady. ---

Some years back, I almost adopted a rabbit from the Humane Society, but he was a digger. His putative name was Herb and I was going to call him Herb Burrows. Nixed by my wife. An earlier rabbit of mine was going to be named Cadbury (chocolate treats all over the house). That was nixed by the SO. ---

We adopted another cat in July. She’s six years old, and her name was Goo. We didn’t change her name. We adopted Tonka in 2013. He was eight then, so we didn’t change his name. The cat that adopted us, was orange and white. We called her ‘the Creamsicle kitty’ when we’d see her. When she adopted us, we called her Creamsicle. (We miss her. ☹ ) If I had two pet salmon, I’d name one Ella and the other Rushdie. If I had two llamas, I’d name them both Fernando. ---

Get your favorite beverage and find a comfortable seat. It’s story time! My kids had been wanting pets, but I told them they would have to wait until Mr VOW retired from the Army. Now, my daughter had been having tantrums for some time, because she thought we should have named her Crystal. Her daddy and I put a lot of thought and emotion into selecting her name, and we informed her regularly that her name would NOT be changing. Ever. I did suggest that she could name her future daughter “Crystal,” she could name every pet she’d ever have “Crystal,” or she could even call her BICYCLE “Crystal.” Her own name was not changing. So, after SGT VOW retired to become Mr VOW, we settled in SCal and almost immediately acquired two cats. One was a female, a grey tabby stripe. She was named (you guessed it) “Crystal.” The other cat was a boy, solid grey, and he became “Silver.” We had a theme! Cats entered and left our lives, and we did our best to continue the theme. Silver was killed, and we acquired a tiny black kitten who could only be named Onyx. I wanted a cat of my own, so Mr VOW and the kids found a rescue, a flame-point Siamese, meaner than Hell, with amazing blue eyes. I named him Zircon. My daughter found two abandonec orange and whie kittens. One was injured, and he didn’t make it. The second one was a polydactl cat, with front paws that looked like mittens. We tossed around gemstone and precious metal names, when my son made the proclamation, “His nane is Toe-Paz!” (topaz) A part-time resident had a dark pink nose, so he became Garnet. Zircon made the trips back and forth between SCal and AZ. He was a trooper! But when he turned13, he got sick, and he couldn’t be saved. I cried for days. We went to a Humane Society shelter, with the intention of getting me a female kitten. I came home with two “older” male littermates. Funny how that works. The cat who won my heart was a gorgeous Ocicat with intense green eyes. I naned him Peridot, and we called him Peri. His brother had softer green eyes, and I named him Jasper. Alas, Peri had picked up every contagious bug at the shelter. Giardia was one infection. He had a permanent case of the runs and crapped everwhere. My whole family hated him, and I tried to explain that he was SICK and didn’t have the language skills to tell us! Peri finally wasted to almost nothing, except a huge belly. The vet tested him, and diagnosed Feline Infectious Peritonitis. It’s one of the nastiest contagious diseases that kenneled animals can pass around. My last visit with him, I looked into those gorgeous green eyes and I told him I loved him, and that I would see him again at Rainbow Bridge. Jasper tested negative for FIP. He’s my baby boy, and he loves only me. My lap belongs completely to him, and if he doesn’t get enough lap time, he scolds me mercilessly. Now, my daughter and her family name their pets after booze… ~VOW ---

# I want a pet Crow. I shall name it Sioux. ~VOW, I loved your story and pet names. The Siameezers names came from their pedigree names. They are fitting for the most part. Generally in the past we’ve had food names for cats. The residing barn cat is named Sausage, becoz he/she is so fat. We had a black cat for awhile named Bean. Many more I can’t seem to remember right now. The new baby kitten at the Wrek, Jrs. Is named Monkey. ---

I used to have five ghost glass catfishes (the kind you can see through). The one with the bent tail fin was Larry. The others were Darryl, Darrell, Darroll, and Deryl. I also had a betta named Sooner. (He was red.) ---

1980… Yankees game was on TV. New nameless cat would see the ball moving on the tv screen and try to hit it with his paw. The family joked that the cat was trying to catch the ball. Then I realized that Thurman Munson recently died and he was the catcher for the Yankees. We named the cat Thurmon Monson. ---

I’ve always wanted to get a pair of Cavalier King Charles spaniel puppies and name them Buck and Medea (names of characters on an old Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode that, weirdly enough, starred Martin Milner. But I digress). Mrs. J. is hesitant about Buck as a dog name, thinking that if I’m out in public calling “Buck!” people will misinterpret it. ☹ ---
