# Names of weird or abscure car parts

These days, lots of people probably don’t know what a wing window is.

Dashpots have already been menitoned (my MG has two of them), so how about a “winged knockoff”?

Some older cars (they seemed to be more popular on sports and racing cars) had a single large nut to hold on each wheel. Some had an octagonal head, and instead of a lug wrench the car would have a large wrench like a church key, and a heavy mallet. Put the church key on the large nut and hit it with the mallet to tighten or loosen. That’s the knockoff part.

A slightly fancier version had small protrusions on the nut. When James Bond is driving his Aston Martin in _Goldfinger_, and the spinner extends out to pop the tires of the car next to him, that’s a winged knockoff.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are other names for it.
