I would like to add :

Riley/ Ryley and all other variations for a girl or boy. It’s a last name, you bastards.

Why not take a nice Polish last name and make it a first name. Stepanowski Miller.

Kowalski Jones. (That sounds strangely phallic, donnit?)

Both my dad’s and brother’s middle name is Wayne. Neither are serial killers. To my knowledge. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Made up names, like:
-laShonda
-Lekisha
-Lacarsha
How about some down-to-earth names, like “Hey You”, and “Pud”?
BTW, what happened to the swedish couple that wanted to name their son 10011000100011101010? (Or somethink like that in binary)?

Am I the only one that is reading this thread just to make sure that my daughters name isn’t mentioned?😃 So far so good.

But, again, if you read my post and **Nginza, Seated** ’s post, you might understand that sometimes Black parents do this as a way of creating history where they have very little history. LeShonda may be the daughter of Leroy and Shonda. That is the case with the kids I mentioned in my daughter’s class, and to be honest, I’d rather have a so-called “made up” name than a name that is not made up but the spelling is.

Of course, this is a thread about people’s opinions, so YMMV and all that.

ETA: No, **Ludy** , you’re not!

I’ve worked with enough children (Children’s Museum intern, swim coach, et al) that I can tell you you do your kid a major disservice - and I mean _major_ disservice by giving them a popular name.

I guess I just never expected Theodore to get really popular all of a sudden. ☹

> The problem is that it is extremely difficult to predict, in many cases, if there will be three children with the same name in one class. I’m pregnant right now and am finding myself in the position of wanting a name that’s not too popular (no top 100 for us), while trying to determine if the names we like are suddenly going to shoot through the roof in popularity. Is our name going to be the next Emma or Jacob? I have some names picked out that I thought were pretty safe, but now it seems like every pregnancy or naming board I visit has moms declaring those same names as their favorite. Do I really have to name my child Leonard or Gertrude just to avoid this? It’s beginning to seem like it, unfortunately.

So far, I’ve been lucky with Josie’s name–there’s not a single other Josephine in her day care.

Right. I mean, the thread asks for names you loathe, and he has a right to loathe those names the same as I have a right to find Starquasha and Rolexus hilarious.

It is the posters that are implying that parents are harming their children in some way by naming them ‘made up’ names that I think are just incorrect.

This is really more the direction I thought this thread would go. I got sucked into the “types of names you loathe” interpretation myself.

Getting back on track…I hate the name Chantal because a girl named that used to terrorize me on the schoolbus.

Really? Theodore Huxtable was a character on the Cosby Show. Now that tons of TV shows are available on DVD, people who “grew up” in the 80’s are re-watching them and having babies. Plus “Theo” is a good shortener.

And my cousin’s little boy (in preschool) is Leonardo, and they call him Leo. But I think he’s the only one so far.

What really bugs me about Caitlyn, Kate-lynne, Q’ait-lleeenne etc etc is that they’re based on a misconception of how the name **Caitlin** is actually pronounced. It’s more akin to “Kathleen” when pronounced properly.

Oh and I also have a special bit of hate for Jack and Josh. Based on my wife’s school classes, it seems that every male baby born in the past five years in the UK is called one of those two names. (The girls are mostly Abigails with a surprising number of Skys and Skyes. And even a Skye-Abigail this year.)

**Michael** , though always a strong performer, didn’t fully hit his stride until 1954.

Since then, he has been in first or second place for American boys’ names _every single year_.

Since 1999, Michael has been running just behind **Jacob** (who has made an astonishing push to the front since the '60s, when he was way back in 300th-something place).
