Naming Convention about the Bronx, NY

Anyway, there is one other official name with the article ‘the’: The Dalles, Oregon, a major stop on the old Oregon Trail. It appears also that it was named after a river, although it’s not totally clear.

However, just a few hours west, Buffalonians do refer to it as “the 90.” Not sure how far this extends.

My two theories:

1. Proximity to Canada
2. NY Thruway is a toll road until you get to the Buffalo area, whereupon it becomes a normal freeway. Perhaps contrary to the official view, locals don’t consider the free part of I-90 to be part of the Thruway.

87 is also the thruway til it hits Albany, then it becomes the northway. But it’s always just 87.
