> If they trust the nanny, why would they not trust the nanny to prevent her boyfriend (who obviously, being a man, will be overcome with lust at the sight of a child) from acting on his insatiable primitive male urges?
>
> Or, to put it another way, what the actual fuck is the problem here?

The actual fuck problem is:

1. The nanny’s job is to watch kids. Significant others are a strong potential distraction from that. That could become a safety issue, which is a serious concern. I am a parent, and I know how hard it is to pay attention to the kid and also have adult life. So it I’m paying you, I expect you to stay engaged with the kid, not your boyfriend.

2. It’s a serious violation of trust to being an uninvited person into your employers private space without permission. In this case, there was permission so it was okay. But the bf hadn’t been vetted, that’d be an issue.

3. Love created blind spots, and even otherwise level headed people often make incredibly poor choices in who they date, especially when they are young. Love makes people dumb.

4. It’s just plain unprofessional to socialize on company time. And if a nanny is unprofessional about this, what else is she unprofessional about?

Care of your kids is not a place for the benefit of the doubt. If something doesn’t seem right, you protect the kids first and clear things up later.

What are the ages involved here? Because a babysitter watching a pair of 10 year olds doesn’t have to be nearly as diligent as someone watching kindergartners.

3, 6, 7, and 9. And because it was asked upthread and I don’t think I ever answered, the nannycouple were in their early 20s. Post-undergrad would be my guess.

Holy crap - 4 kids under the age of 10 until 10 PM? In that case, I think the Nanny sweet-talked/blackmailed her boyfriend to come over and help her out, and he wasn’t smart or quick-witted enough to pretend his mother just had a heart attack and/or dump his girlfriend.

How about on the sofa then? I don’t think I’m agile enough for the clock anyway.
