I stand by my post. The technology of the card and of the readers is the same all over the world: when it is not being used as “you can read the card in any of X available ways”, that’s a matter with the software of the specific reading machine (it’s a hardware matter only if the machine is so old it doesn’t have a chip slot). It can’t be a problem with the card itself, because if it was, you would either be able to use it only by swiping, or only by chipping. You guys are dealing with programs that say “if chip is available, then reject swiping”. ---

Dear Everyone who still does this, Can we please, please stop with the threatening or pretending to threaten young men with violence when they come to date your daughters? It’s not funny any more. Joking about violence is not funny. Pretending you will shoot my son, or any young man, if anything happens on a date that you disapprove of is flat out wrong. Here’s a fact…girls want sex, too. Sometimes, they are even the instigator! Maybe it’s time for us parents of boys to start threatening your daughters with shotguns if they “make a move” on our sons? No, that would be stupid. Just as stupid as it is to threaten young men. It’s time to stop joking about violence. It is a tired cliche whose time has passed. ---

I have water dripping from the toilet handle in my bathroom and the maintenance crew has been here twice and still have not resolved the problem. I have to call them to come back on Monday ---

My local Trader Joe’s just updated their Point of Sale devices to handle cards with chips. And it has slowed things down to a crawl. The lines snake down the aisles like they never did before. And why? Because the new system doesn’t let you use your card until the entire transaction is completed. Used to be, as soon as the clerk started ringing up your purchases, you could slide your card and type in your PIN. Now, you must wait until all the transactions have been rung up, the amount has been added together, and it sits there staring at you. Then it lets you slide your card or enter your chipped card. And then it sloooooowly reads the card and slooooowly calculates with your bank, and then slooooowly tells you to enter your PIN and slooooowly tells you it’s done. ---

Well, I was going to take my wife to see Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 a day early; our local theater is showing a “special” double feature Wednesday. It’s being advertised with “See both movies back-to-back for one price!”. Except that “one price” happens to be twenty-five dollars. That may not sound like a lot to those of you in NYC and SF, but it’s three times the price of a regular film at this theater. And twice the regular price would be too much, since we own Part I AND already saw it in the theater. Fifty dollars for a couple to see a movie? Cinemark can bite me. ---

Apparently last week was ‘everybody constantly walk in front of other people for no reason’ week. This week appears to be “stand 8-10 feet back in line and get pissy about the people behind you” week. Woman in line for the bus. Just had to be about 8’ behind the person in front of her, even as we’re boarding. Snarls at gentle gestures to get moving. Get the fuck over yourself, lady. There’s zero reason for you to be that far behind the person in front of you getting on the damned bus. I almost walked around you twice because of the stop-pause-wait bullshit from that far away. Guy at the breakfast counter. Extremely ugly woman at the far end and idiot at the very beginning having a long talk. I walk up, the cook asks me what I want and I’m basically talking over asshole’s shoulder to order, as he doesn’t move up. Hell, I can’t even grab a tray because the fucker is leaning on them. Cook starts cooking my breakfast. Asshole takes a half-step away from the counter to look at his phone, I grab a tray and squeeze forward. Cue snorting and sighing from asshole, who angrily walks away for a minute before coming back. By that time I was in the middle of the counter and he went back to leaning on the trays at the beginning of it. Woman comes up to order. Same bullshit. She orders around him. :smack: ---

The kludged-together “solution” is dual-function chip-and-swipe machines that reject a swipe if you have a chipped card so that you’re forced to use the chip. Except that many vendors haven’t activated the chip function on their machines, and you don’t know which way it will go until you try it. ---
