I just wanted to chime in and say that this thread is fantastic and I really appreciate the informative links provided. This is one of the reasons I love the SDMB. The Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse has always been a passing interest of mine, but I’ve never seen the full-length clips before.

At the Point Defiance Zoo (in Tacoma) they have a piece of the original wreckage in the aquarium, with information about the animals that live on and around it. More than once I have heard parents telling their kids about how the bridge came down in an earthquake. :smack:

Not to hijack, but where is it in the aquarium? I haven’t been to the Point Defiance Zoo in years and I don’t remember seeing it.

(Also: zoos are a hotbed of parental ignorance. Never will I forget what I heard a parent say while pointing at a clearly female orangutan resting in a hammock with a rope hanging from it. “Look at that monkey! He’s got a long tail!”)

Great thread. I saw a brief color clip of the footage in high school and was mesmerized. One of the great engineering blunders of all time. Too bad about Tubby, though.

I found a map. It’s not really near anything, except maybe the penguins.
