Look, I don’t condone the man’s self-centeredness in retrieving his personal belongings, it was a dickhead thing to do – I said that. But don’t go making shit up just to be a contrary ass. The soldier interviewed said a LOT of people were “rescued” who otherwise wouldn’t have been. Rescued, as in ‘had to be saved’. What makes you think you’re in a better position to judge the severity of their circumstances than the soldiers on the scene? The water was up to the third step of the Congressman’s house – that doesn’t mean it wasn’t at a more dangerous level down the hill and across the street from him. And it doesn’t make being surrounded hip deep by toxic water any less life-threatening. ---

I have come to absolutely loathe this type of argument (If X, then liberals would do Y). Apparently all you can do to form an argument is make up bullshit. You have any number of liberal/Democratic people in this thread condemning this guy’s actions, despite his party affiliation. As another counter-example, Randy “Duke” Cunningham has proven himself to be one of the dirtiest motherfuckers around, is a Republican, and has had not one single thread dedicated to him on this board. Oh, you people are WAY off course. Did you not SEE the damage to his lawn fer crisake? I’ve been there. Had a Town truck leave a crevice eighteen inches wide, and two inches deep during a snow storm. Damage didn’t show up until the Spring. Sonofa bitch! Had to scream at the Town Clerk for twenty minutes. Does he know the Town will probably send a crew over with fill and grass seed? Yeah, and in that closed thread, I posted this: Yes, and let’s note that he’s a Democrat; I’m a Democrat, and I think he should be beaten about the nuts for this. OK? None of that closing ranks, spinning and taking care of our own shit. But also, I have to ask, why would the National Guard do that for him? They should have told him to go climb up on the roof and wait like everyone else. We have a ways to go; there’ll be many a tale of bad behavior to get up in arms about, across the ideological spectrum. ---

What I don’t understand about the right wing in general is the fact that they don’t want any accountability. The Republicans in congress blocked an independent investigation into the failures related to Katrina, and try to frame a search for accountability as the “blame game”. I’m a proud liberal leftie. Bring on all the investigations, and nail those responsible, whether they be Democratic or Republican. Country before party, and all that…something the GOP doesn’t seem to get. ---

Yeah, I think the crux of it, is our “me me me” society is reflected on a macro scale as “party before country”. I see it on both sides, but honestly I see it on the right more. Perhaps because they’re in power at the moment on currently “on defense”, but I would expect the same thing on the other side. I also think that Bush on his own is the most damaging pres to come down the pike. We could have _anyone_ else in office, repub or dem, and I think we’d be a lot better off. ---

Well, for myself, I was just making a joke about the ‘democrat’ thing…while I find this board hopelessly partisan sometimes, its also filled with folks who can look beyond partisan politics and blast their own side when its warrented. Thats one of the reasons I come on this board in fact. I noted that those who were blasting the congressman the most were those usually associated with the ‘lefty’ or ‘democrat’ factions on the board…I actually haven’t seen any of those generally associated with what constitutes ‘righties’ or ‘republican/conservatives’ joining in (with the exception of me of course 😉 ) I was just pointing to the irony (well, it wasn’t that ironic, devils advocate that I am) of me defending this guy while those who are actually Democrats were attacking him…unfairly IMHO. If one reads the article and thinks about it non-politically and dispassionately, I think that a measure of slack can and should be cut for this guy. Now…he might very well have OTHER serious things to blast him on, maybe even about the storm…but not this IMO. YMMV and all that. -XT ---

Hell, _i_ agree with you, which, given the complete idiocy you so often display on these boards, is a fucking miracle in itself. And **World Eater** , one of the strongest critics of the current Republican administration on these boards, started [his own Pit thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=334957) about this guy before he knew about this one. And other leftists and liberals responded positively to _that_ thread also.
