A generic “somewhere in Scandinavia” one that’s been creeping in in the UK recently is “Scandawegians”. On the one hand it’s useful, as there are some shared traits between the four nordic countries, but on the other hand it’s quite insulting, I think, as it indicates a dismissal of their national identity. Most of the below are insulting: People from Hong Kong: Hongkies. Fillipinos: Flips. Japanese: Nips. Irish: Paddies, Bogtrotters. Northern Irish (in the Republic of Ireland): Nordies. Republic of Ireland (in Northern Ireland): Mexicans. I only heard the latter a few times, before the Celtic Tiger, but it made me giggle - a stereotype of a country that was poor, Catholic, with bad roads, corrupt government, etc. - and south of the border. ---

In Central America, Costa Ricans are Ticos, Nicaraguans are Nicas and Guatemalans are Chapines. In the Spanish Caribbean, Dominicans are Quisqueyanos and Puerto Ricans are Boricuas. In the English Speaking Caribbean people from Barbados are Bajans. Not sure if I remember correctly, but do Venezuelans call Colombians ‘Gochos’ or is that just people from the border area? I know Colombians have a name for Venezuelans but it escapes me now. ---

There’s more sheep over there, y’see … 😉 We haven’t really called Americans Yanks since perhaps as late as the 1960s. “Yanks” conjures up nostalgic stuff to do with World War II more than anything else. “Pom” seems to be dying out as a nickname for Brits, but we still have the less-than-wonderful terms “currymunchers” (for those from the Indian subcontinent) and “coconuts” (Pacific Islanders) used in ordinary speech. ---
