Native American Land and International Borders

FWIW, I knew exactly what you meant as soon as I read this post.

The Euro ancestors just couldn’t live and let live. :frowning:

Google: FBI law enforcement bulletin Indian tribal sovereignty. It’s the first page that turns up for me.

It is worth quite much. Thank you.

Having driven through some reservations last weekend (3 pueblos on I-25 north of Albuquerque, NM: San Felipe, Santo Domingo, and Cochiti Pueblos specifically), I have a practical law enforcement question…

All three pueblos had very clear signs at the entrance that it is forbidden to transport alcoholic beverages through the pueblos or to take photos or make sketches in the pueblos, and that violators are subject to enforcement/penalties imposed by the respective tribe. (One pueblo, I believe Santo Domingo, also had a similar restriction on cell phones.) There was hardly a soul to be seen when I drove through, but on several occasions I saw clear indications of violations of these (presumably?) tribal regulations – empty alcohol cans/bottles on the roadside, on one occasion representing most of a case of beer (including the box).

So in practical terms, is there any enforcement of these rules? And if so, how and by whom is justice dispensed? Would enforcement be different for a resident of the particular pueblo than for someone just passing through? What would likely happen if someone saw me, say, snapping some photos? (I didn’t, of course, nor do I ever plan to do so – I have more respect than that. But I’m sure there is someone out there who doesn’t.) And would this mean that, say, a student living in a pueblo couldn’t draw a portrait of a relative?

tyger, I read your post carefully. I’ve barely slept in the last few days, no less traipsed off to the library to find the books you listed. My apologies if it seemed I didn’t give your offering due dilligence.

Sorry I sounded so cranky. :o Very often I find that the best way to cope with “breakthrough” pain (beyond my meds) is to immerse myself in an intellectual challenge. From that perspective, you helped me cope by giving me a challenge. BTW, I don’t suggest you try to read all of both books. Use the index, etc., to help you find what relates directly to your questions - unless you unaccountably become fascinated. :stuck_out_tongue:

If, when you’ve shoveled your way through all that … uh … stuff, you still have questions - ones of a factual, rather than a speculative nature, that is - post 'em. I have a little cred with some people from various nations, so it’s possible I can get answers. As for the speculative questions, only a being with prescient omniscience could answer you with assurance. And that ain’t me, fershure!
