Yet another thing to mention: Contact. Languages may acquire a number of features from an unrelated language with which it comes into contact. One example from Asia is Vietnamese acquiring tone from contact with Chinese although it is unrelated to that language. In the Americas, migrating groups came into contact with other groups and shared vocabulary and perhaps other features.
By the way, there are also tone languages native to the Americas.
