I never thought the National Guard was easy, not at all; I just thought its purpose was to be ready for any emergency at home – not getting sent overseas for long stretches.

Well, planned and unplanned. For years before Bush was even in office, neocons were planning _to_ do it; they just didn’t plan _how_ to do it.

> You were wrong. In spite of what you heard about the Guard during Vietnam (i.e., Bush got off by hiding in the Guard…actually, he got off because F-102s were obsolete almost as soon as they were deployed and so were not extensively used in Vietnam, although being a Bush probably didn’t hurt), the Guard and Reserve has always been deployed, emergencies or not. My own unit went to Vietnam, Grenada, Haiti, Iraq, Panama, you name it.

> The idea that we sit around and play at it one weekend a month, two weeks a year is a cruel fiction.

I can see why you’re sensitive to this, but I didn’t say anything about sitting around 50 weeks a year - just that I thought the guard was primarily used in things like disaster relief. Even I’m wrong that ad still gave me the creeps.

You should have learned long ago that listening to Kid Rock lyrics is about as worthwhile as slamming your head into a wall: it hurts a lot, and you’re stupider afterward.

I wouldn’t describe it as ‘primarily’ disaster relief. They serve two functions - one is performing disaster relief (fighting floods, fires, etc.), the other is deploying as a combat force. During peacetime the ‘combat force’ part of things is simply maintaining readiness and not as apparent as disaster relief.

And the convoy STOPS, and the gunner from the lead HMMV gets out to pick up the soccer ball and had it back to the kids? Proclaiming that that’s our mission in the world: to promote traffic safety and fetch lost soccer balls from the safety of an armored vehicle filled with armed soldiers?

Yup, that’s the one. Me, during the scintillating moral solidarity ball return scene:

“Lookout! Bomb! _tongue-flick machine gun sounds_”

Constantly ragged on that fucking idiotic Kid Rock song, too. I just wish he could hear the heckling. I’m not really surprised that he’s a gigantic tool though.

I’m surprised they didn’t have a close-up of the Humvee’s emergency blinkers going on.

I had to go to my happy place until it was over.

> I don’t doubt that. Many people still think of the NG as “I’ll join that instead because I won’t get deployed”. The reality nowadays though is that you’re more likely to be deployed with the NG than in the past. A kid told me that he was going to join the NG when I was recruiter so he wouldn’t get deployed. The local NG unit was Artillery. The sure weren’t packing up to go shell Tom’s River. (though I wouldn’t have cared if they did).

My friend came to me with this gross distortion a month back. He was sweet on some girl that was gung ho about going into the NG (A Nascar, Koolaid drinking kid rock fan, three doors down). Scary thing about it, He was also considering it too (Pussy will make a guy do all kinds of crazy things.). Anyways, I told him that he should enjoy her company while he could, as she was likely heading to Stan or the Raq soon, since she was signing up. He said, “No, when you go in the NG you don’t go to Iraq. She told me so!” I tried to explain to him that a great portion of the soldiers in Iraq right now are from the NG.. He would have none of it though.

Perhaps one of the recruiters on the board here would like to help set the facts straight and tell me if one could expect deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan if one were to join the NG, today? Was I wrong?

The closest thing to a friend I have is Full-Time Guard. He’s white and pretty much all his co-workers are white. They have done at least 3 seperate tours of Iraq/Afganistan. They were subject to frequent mortar attack.

He doesn’t like Kid Rock or Nascar.

This is the “Air” Guard, so maybe that changes things somewhat.

> When I watch these things (and I’ve seen both videos a lot since I go to a lot of movies for my job), I just sit there wondering why Kid Rock doesn’t drag his ass over to Baghdad and fight if he’s such a fucking “warrior.” Three Doors Down too. Let these pricks go pick up roadside bombs for 18 months and then maybe they’ll have earned the right to participate in these recruiting commercials. Telling other kids to do it while they lay around doing blow and shagging groupies is kind of a dick move, if you ask me.

Actually, that’s one I’ll have to say no to. Kid Rock is quite a big supporter of the USO shows and the military. Whenever he comes to play down here in the Norfolk, VA area, he usually tries to have charity shows for the military, and he also has gone over several times to perform for the troops.
He and the WWE are two of the bigger more consistent supporters of the Troops one Day 1 way back in the early 2000’s. So i do respect him for at least being consistent, even if I don’t care much for that song or the propaganda film itself. I have no issues though with the SONG being used, it’s just the video I’m not a fan of- Kid Rock though does support the military quite a bit, so I may not go as far as to say he should be over there fighting with the troops and all (because that’s just hyperbole), but at least he does support them via his own methods/talents.

I have no idea about 3 Doors Down though.

USO shows do not impress me. Any jack off can do USO shows. There’s no danger involved in that. He’s trying to tell other people to go risk their lives when he’s not willing to do it himself. Playing danger free USO shows does not make up for that.

I worked full-time for the Guard all of last year, and am beginning my first deployment to Iraq on Wednesday. I don’t like Kid Rock or NASCAR, either.

And to the deplorable piece of trash that called members of the military “bullet sponges,” I hope that, if you ever go outside of your house and away from your computer, you die a horrible fucking death. Thanks.

It was me. I’ve been in the military. I’ll say whatever the fuck I want. My use of the phrase “bullet sponge” (a phrase used BY the troops in Iraq) was not meant to denigrate military personel, but was a comment how on how they are regarded by their civilian leadership.

Meh. Performing in a USO show is at least as dangerous as most troops’ deployment. Though its only for a week or however long they’re in country. The country is rife with FOBBITS right now.

I’m sure there’s some shit on the Iraqi bases you just wouldn’t believe unless you saw it. In Balad right now, they have speed radar. Man, I know that sounds like something military and high-tech… but I’m talking about the fucking things on the side of the road that tell you “YOUR SPEED” and the speed limit. If you go too fast, you can get a ticket.
Yup, you heard that right… speeding tickets. In Iraq…
Drive Safely!

Many of the bases in Iraq are practically identical to anything you’d find in noncombat theatres. Certainly comfortable as the shit in Korea.

And **mshar253** , calm the fuck down. “Bullet Sponges” is practically a compliment around here.

Hijack: Oh God, they have those there now? When I was there last year they just had bored Security Forces guys doing that. It was really bad on the AF side of the base, the Army side not so much.
