Hey all, this has recently come up in conversation, in which the parties in attendance all agreed that a navel piercing has a '90s connection. This was an early 20s group, male and female both. I was surprised by this and was wondering if this is a general thing that I just missed the boat on entirely. Do you think navel piercings are out of style? ---

I still have mine, and I don’t really care if it’s “in style” or not. As long as my stomach looks okay, it’ll stay. ---

Fifteen years ago, they were so popular that one of the guys who ran a piercing business in Sacramento would answer the phone “Navel piercings are $42.10” Half the time, there’d be a pause and he’d repeat “They’re forty-two dollars and ten cents. Would you like to make an appointment?” ---

Yes, I would say that they are outdated as far as trends go, but I still think they look hot as long as the girl can pull it off. Many can’t. ---

Outdated, just like the Monroe piercing and that obnoxious tiny-tiny-on-the-side-of-my-nose trend. Facial piercings also seem to have lost their previous vogue, as have earrings on males in general. -IST, with ears, lips, and nips growing increasingly unfashionable every day. ---

Somewhat off topic but i recently got a horrizontal eyebrow piercing on my right eyebrow. Most of the time people get vertical piercings done but i wanted to mine to be more unique than others. so i suppose you just have to find a way to slightly change any common piecing to make it more fashionable. ---

Well, I don’t think they’re “out of style” like mullets or something. But they don’t really add any cool points either. I think that they’re sort of at the “neutral” point. If I noticed that someone had a small thingie in her navel, I’d just assume that she was maintaining a piercing that she got a decade ago. If someone was trying to draw all sorts of attention to it…well, I’d think that was sort of laughable at this point. ---

Aw, man, are navel piercings really considered outdated? I got mine in 1999, and I still love it! I guess I’m just a fogey now. 'Scuse me, I gotta go listen to my Blink 182 “Enema of the State” CD. 😛 ---

They aren’t attention-grabbing or unusual anymore, so in that sense, sure, they’re outdated. If a 15-year-old Starbucks-slurping MTV junkie has one, chances are good that navel piercings aren’t on the cutting-edge. I think they’re a tiny bit tacky but hey, if you’ve got the stomach for it (no pun intended) there’s no harm in it. A friend of mine in college (ten years ago, FTR) had one and the hole had started to stretch and get a bit loose-looking…she hadn’t gained any weight or anything but the hole went from an ear-pierce-size to…well…a real actual hole. Not cute. But whatever floats your boat. 🙂 ---

Who gives a \*\*\*\* if they’re out of fashion? You let somebody put a needle through your bellybutton, so you must have wanted it pretty bad. If you wanted it that badly just to be fashionable, then, well, you’re an idiot. If you also got a tramp stamp because all your friends said they were cool, the above goes double for you. If it’s a Chinese character, triple. If it’s a Chinese character the tattoo guy said meant “love” or “faith” or “strength” or “Jack Daniels’ is the elixir of life”, and you didn’t confirm this with a Chinese person before getting inked, you really should go and get yourself sterilized. ---

I got mine in 2001. So if they’re a 90s thing it was already out of style. I don’t really consider it outdated though. However I am getting to the age now where I’m thinking I should probably remove it. ---
