Well, the other half of the equation is Oladipo lost his job. Fournier is their guy at the 2.
I expect they value themselves as a lot better than a 7th seed. The Pacers under Vogel were all about slow pace and smart rotations and protecting the rim. Oladipo is a gambler and has poor defensive instincts. So out he goes and in comes a rim protector. Whether they’re right or not, I’m sure they’re figuring on being really good defensively really soon, and winning that way.
LeBron has opted out of his contract and is a free agent! But he’ll stay in Cleveland. Supposedly he wants to restructure the Cavs more to his liking, which almost certainly means trading Kevin Love. Right? He wants CP3 or Melo, but neither of them would be traded straight up for Love.
I’m all for Dynasties. It’s better for the league, in my opinion. Look at the showtime teams and the Celtics teams in the 80s. Those teams were deep man and people revere that era. Now the Salary cap makes it harder to make these super teams but once you can pull it off, it is all the more effective. I’m a spurs fan and even I like the move, should be a fun year. I love it when the whole league is forced to strategize in order to beat one team.
These things aren’t guaranteed to work either. This is a bad comparison, I realize, but the lakers were a disaster when they got Dwight. Sometimes teams don’t work…although I doubt this is the case here.
As far as what that means for Durant, if he stayed on OKC it wasn’t his team, and this isn’t his team. His only shot to be the guy was Boston, maybe Miami. Maybe he figured that as long as he have to defer, I may as well win. Personally I’d I were a fan of his, I’d want him to be THE guy, but if he is happy, good for him.
The question for me is, what guard can the Spurs get that can stay in front of fast guards!
They replaced the weakest link on the “death lineup” with Kevin freaking Durant and removed their biggest threat in the west in one fell swoop. GS is going to have just an easy time getting to the finals as Cleveland. They might as well skip the first three rounds of the playoffs now.
Well, Tim Duncan retired today. 19 years with the Spurs and now he’s gone.
And I love Tim and am thrilled that he’s a high character guy and all that, but my God, this is possibly the dumbest financial decision anybody who had $25 million stolen from them just last year can make, especially with the cap expansion.
Think a single person in San Antonio would’ve begrudged Tim a 2 year ride on the gravy train? Hell, even Manu signed back up merely to be a fan favorite and he’s shot to shit - I’ve heard $10mil for MG whispered on the local talk shows, this for a guy who made $2.8mil last year and turns 39 this month.
Yes, the Spurs are going to pay TD his $6.8mil. But he should have stayed longer and gotten more money. YOU JUST LOST $25 MIL! WHAT ARE YOU DOING RETIRING?
