Actually, some are for cats. Most “cat walks” aren’t, but cats do love this kind of thing. It’s quite an appropriate term.
I’ve heard that Greenland used to be much more temperate, before the “Little Ice Age” began in the late Middle Ages. Apparently, there was at least a small area of farmable land at the southern end.
Iceland, however, has lots of geothermal heat, and has pretty much always been surprisingly pleasant for a place so far north.
