This is gonna sound lame compared to most of the classics listed here, but the _Dressed To Kill_ album by KISS sounds great after a heavy session. The songs are all pretty much standard mid-seventies hard rock, but it’s the guitar tone that does it. I recommend unplugging the headphones and blasting it through the speakers. The band themselves have always complained about the sound of this album, and said that the producer (Neil Bogart) was smoking a lot of pot at the time, so there ya go. Without pot: “eh”.

I wholeheartedly second _Master Of Reality_ by Black Sabbath and _Moving Pictures_ by Rush, and would add _Stained Class_ by Judas Priest. Just try not to shoot yourself after.

Much of Santana works here. Just sail away on the guitar…

> If you can get hold of any of the **National Lampoon** recordings like _Lemmings_, or especially _Radio Dinner_, you will laugh until death. If you get the jokes. No wait. These were Nat Lam at their prime, so they will kill you anyway. Even if you are totally sober. Or soberly totalled.

“Yoko! Move up!”

**Kraftwerk** _Radio-Activity_ will trip you out when you’re that way inclined.

If you want a more peaceful, mellow thing, I’d recommend **R.E.M.** _Murmur_.

Already established, but most of Pink Floyd. Alan’s Pyschedelic Breakfast, all of Umma-Gumma etc.
From Yes: Gates of Delirium and Close to the Edge are incredible in altered states.
Guinnevere from Crosby, Stills and Nash.
Elephant Talk by King Crimson.
Zappa, especially Joe’s Garage.

Much more but a good list could be built out of this thread.

Jim

I came back to throw in Umma Gumma and Joe’s Garage but I see I’m a day late and a dollar short.

So how about, \*\*Kate Bush’s \*\* _The Red Shoes_?

Oh, and Beethoven’s 5th and 9th Symphonies will make your face explode.
