Need immediate wine-related assistance (what's a pinot?)

A superb idea!

rexnervous beat me to it. 25 bucks can buy you a respectable bottle of each. But I would reverse the order: Have the red open when she arrives…casually hanging out with a small tray of cheddar cheese and wheat thins, then move to the crispy white with the sushi.

When given the chance, I always drink two bottles of wine.

Done and done.

I got a pinot grigio by Ecco Domani. It was much less expensive than I imagined ($10) and it was actually one of the more expensive ones there.

It’s possible but I don’t think so. This will actually be our 3rd date. Both dinner dates in the past she’s ordered wine and seemed pretty confident about what she wanted. And I’m happy to say I’ve gotten to know her a bit and I don’t detect anything pretentious in her at all.

Now me on the other hand:

her: oh, OK, I’m sure this will be fine but I was thinking of a Pinot Noir.
me: Yeah, I wasn’t sure but I figured the pleasant floral and tropical fruit aromas of a Pinot Grigio might be a better compliment to our sushi.
her: Ya know I agree. Gee Moe, you’re so cultured and smart.
me: Yes, but I’d trade it all for world peace.
her: (awed sigh)

by yourself?

That too!

But I meant as a couple. There never seems to be enough in one little bottle to get two people through the entire evening.

When I get together with the girls we polish off 1.5 each without blinking an eye (or slurring a consonant cluster)

To those posts that appeared just after I hit “submit”:

Yeah, I’m the kinda guy who drinks till the bottle(s) is/are empty, and then decides whether to continue with beer or tanqueray and tonics. She seems more of a single-glass-with-dinner type thus far.

I’d rather not even have the option of getting inappropriately drunk.

Of course I’ll still be evaluating the possible ways of segueing into talk of the following day’s activities

You will let us know how the meal wen’t, won’t you?

Way to go, Moe. All things considered, Ecco Domani is probably my favorite. Also, I didn’t mean to suggest your date might be pretentious, just that she might have picked up the term somewhere (and how else is she to express what she wants) or that she might just be unable to recall the rest of its name. Now that I know she knows her wine, I might be more inclined to think she meant Pino Noir after all. But it sounds like you’ve got it all under control.

Breakfast* was delicious

Thanks all!
*Actually, it was just leftover sushi, but good nevertheless.

You’re very welcome, and congratulations. Looks like things went great.

So, what do think she meant? Was it grigio or noir?

Well, it never came up actually. I just simply asked her if I did OK with the wine and she said it was very good.

Damn! I’ve been wondering all weekend if she wanted pinot noir with her sushi!

But, it sounds like you had a great time and that was the whole point. Congrats again.
