# Needed: black and white foods

We are throwing a party for New Years’, and the theme is “Black and White.” We’re trying to come up with food ideas that are (you guessed it) black or white, or ideally, some combination of the two.
We’ve got tons of ideas for desserts (moon pie, chocolate, vanilla, rice pudding, cheese cake, etc.) and beverages (black russians, white russians, Guinness, white wine, etc.), but we’ve got a problem. We have very few ideas for savory foods.
We’ve thought of black beans, white beans, rice, potatoes, rye bread, various cheeses, poppy seeds, caviar, coconut, and egg whites. We’ve also come up with a lot of almost black and white foods, but don’t want to use those. The toughest thing to think of is black savory foods.
Help us out. What other black and/or white foods are there? What good ways are there to prepare them? We primarily need savory foods, but will take ideas for sweet foods and desserts too.
EDIT: We also need black-and-white-themed games and activities. We’ve thought of Win, Lose, or Draw (black pen on white paper, get it?), but could use other party activities.

Licorice whips.
You didn’t mention the obvious B&W cookie. I don’t care much for them but it seems like this is a must have. Although it can be a little tough to find one where the black side is _really black_ and not dark brown fudge or something.

Some mole sauces could be made dark enough to be black. Bonus points because it goes with (white) chicken and black beans and rice.
Edit - for black and white games, Go, Othello, and Chess all qualify.

You can make checkerboard tea sandwiches with pumpernickel and white bread.
If you can make your own pumpernickel, I wonder if you can add a bit of black food coloring to it?

Also in the cocktail range (which I mistakingly learned during but was able to use for Halloween); if you mix pomegranate juice with Blue Curacao, it turns black. Add vodka and any other mixer stuff for a painfully kick-ass drink…

Whole (in the shell) mussells.
Anything with a blackberry coulis (or blackberry vinagrette for the salad)
I’m pretty sure there’s some fish called a blackfish, though paradoxically it would actually look white once filleted and cooked.
I also believe there is for both tomato and potato a variety that is so dark blue it’s close enough to black. Not easy to find at the local supermarket, of course, but trying to be complete, here.
Peppercorns (both black and white available!)
… and if you don’t mind potentially offending people, and getting away from the classy aspects of a black and white party, there’s always collard greens and chitlins on one side of the table, with bologna and mayo sandwiches on the other…
(PS – I hope at least one couple is planning to dress as Spy vs. Spy, right?)

[Black pudding](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pudding) (also available in black with white bits) was the first thing that came to mind. It will put some people off, though. There’s also white pudding, but it’s not really very white when prepared.
There’s also a variety of white sauces based on cream, butter, cream and/or flower that work well with (white) fish and pasta.
[Black squid ink works in risotto](http://morselsandmusings.blogspot.com/2008/12/squid-ink-risotto.html) and I believe some pasta dishes.
