I just heard that yesterday when my four-year-old daughter was playing on the playground next to our house with my mother-in-law watching her, our elderly neighbor appeared completely naked at his front window and started shaking his genitalia at my MIL (the window is at ground level and just twenty feet away from the playground). She grabbed my daughter immediately and left the scene, and apparently (luckily) my daughter didn’t see anything. God I’m furious. I fought the urge to go spray paint “Pedophile alert!” on his window, and just informed the police online about the incident. Whatever the consequences, this fucktard has made it so that I can’t let my children go play next to my own window for fear that he will appear at his window again. My basic security (concerning my children) is shaken. The neighbor sits in a wheelchair most of the time I’ve seen him, but I’ve also witnessed him stand up and walk on occasion. Don’t know if his condition (which apparently isn’t severe enough) will make things complicated; “but Sir, I’m wheelchair-bound, I cannot have been wiggling my junk at innocent people”. Him being inside his own house the whole time is another potential complication, as anyone has the right to dance naked inside one’s own house.“Gee, I didn’t notice there were people watching!” We’ll see how it goes. Fuck. ---

IANAL, and I’m not necessarily recommending you do this, because I’m unsure of the legality, but you might considering obtaining photographic or video evidence. Maybe that will help in getting some sort of restraining order or other corrective action. Do you think the man’s mental status is of the type where ‘naming and shaming’ might work? If so, with evidence in hand, he might be persuaded to stop this behavior. ---

Can you put up blinds or curtains over that window and others that face his home? It doesn’t stop him from being perverted but it does stop your children from being exposed to his exposure. ---

Years ago something similar happened with an older neighbor acorss the street exposing himself to my mother and my aunt as they left their houses for work in the mornings. (after his own wife was already out of the house). On our side of the street, both households had young girls. Before calling the police, my mother had me go to the house one day to verify she was, indeed, seeing what she thought she was. Yep. So she reported him. A couple of days later, he exposed himself again. As he did, several police officers with cameras appeared from hiding, got the evidence, and took him to court without my mother or aunt ever having to appear. ---

Yeah, I had the same problem with my roommate. Nobody seemed to care, though. Seeing as he’s a dog. ---

I don’t mean to be a jerk or dissenting, but is there any possibility that the man might have dementia? I can’t think of any reason an otherwise perfectly normal elderly individual would do such a thing. ---

I’m thinking dementia too. Inapproriate sexual activity seems a common symptom of it. There was a thread awhile ago about a guy whose grandmother with alzheimer’s came on to him after a restaurant dinner. ---

Here and in most of the cases like this in the US that I have heard of- it isn’t privacy in his own home if it is obviously visible to the outside- if you start doing lines on a mirror or behaving lewdly, masturbation, sex, etc, then the police can easily become involved. If he is simply naked, and doing calisthenics, then that wouldn’t be illegal here, but it wouldn’t be illegal if he was outside, either, here in Berkeley, nor in most of the bay area. If he is actively grabbing and waving his junk, that would be different… ---

That was my first thought, too, when I saw ‘elderly.’ Not that there aren’t a ton of mentally-healthy perverts out there willing to prove me and everyone else wrong! ---

At the large nursing care facility where hubby works, there’s a whole unit for residents who’ve “gone perv” because of their dementia. Even some of the “regular” dementia patients on hubby’s unit exhibit inappropriate sexual behavior. It’s an “interesting” place to work. ---

Your MIL’s statement is all they need to cite this individual. It could be a misdemeanor or a felony, likely a felony that the prosecutor might plead down. Personally, I would have made an appearance at the police station with the MIL in tow if possible. Otherwise, they can go get her statement. The man’s age and being on his own property will not save him. If he has certified dementia, some form of non-criminal action can occur to stop future abuse. ---

Sounds like dementia. I have no idea what the proper response is though, or if it is, then how caretakers stop it from happening in the future. ---

I guess you could plant some hedges then or something. 🙂 Does he live alone? If he is married or has an adult child living with him you may want to go over and mention that you are concerned about his mental health and tell them why. If you aren’t comfortable with that though the police will certainly speak with him about the behavior and may encourage him to undergo some kind of test for dementia.
