Neptune is about to complete its first orbit

Got a link for that? If so, that makes it July 10, 2011.

Depends which hemisphere you’re on.

Or “on”, though not really, since Neptune has no solid surface to stand on. Minnesota does have that, at least.

I don’t know if this is the latest and most authoritative data, but this page says Neptune’s (sidereal) orbital period is 60,189 days. If another source says 60,190, it might just be a matter of rounding.

For what it’s worth, my Python date calculator says that 1846-Sep-23 plus 60,189 days is 2011-Jul-9. And the Wikipedia page referenced by GESancMan above seems to have changed — it now says the special day is July 10.

Yep. We call 'em lakes.

Is anybody else imagining the recent Jimmy Dean’s sausage commercial with the “sun” giving the “planets” a talk about the importance of breakfast while one the “planets” collapses from fatigue on a table then rolls on the floor (hard to say whether its uranus or neptune).

I imagine thats how neptune feels right about now after all these years…

Some slop in the calculations is OK: Since we’re celebrating a birthday, after all, we have a span of over 16 hours we can hit.

Blue noser!
