What were the best NES games to play?

I have a lasting fondness for Crystalis. Other than that, Mike Tysons Punch Out, Super Mario 3, and Tecmo Bowl spring to mind.

**Metroid**. It’s not just a game; it’s a way of life.

Before this goes any further, I should ask what are your opinions regarding emulation?
I was planning to download some of these games.

I really only played sports games, specifically baseball. I beileve I had about 25 baseball games at one point (rough guess but it was around that). For my money, the best baseball game was Baseball Stars. It was the first game that I remember that allowed a person to create their own team and players. It was fun to play too.

Mike Tyson’s Punchout. Piston Honda, Soda Popinski, that one Indian guy that spun around in circles… ah the memories.

Emulations are good to try out games and relive memories in any easy fashion, but they are not perfect.

Final Fantasy
Bionic Commando

Ninja Gaiden
Double Dragon
Contra
Life Force

[\*\* Low-G-Man\*\*](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_G_Man) is a great side-scroller where a spear is your primary weapon against killer robots. I could never get past the submarine boss though.

[\*\* Blaster Master\*\*](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaster_Master) is another great one I couldn’t finish. A side and top scroller

Those are my main two that aren’t the biggest titles. Other games I liked are Dragon Warrior 1 & 2 for good RPGs, Top Gun the Second Mission (I never tried the first) for dogfights, F-15 Strike Eagle for air-to-ground, Silent Service for submarine simulation, Blades of Steel for hockey.

Casino Kid was fun, if you like gambling-based roleplaying-type games.
I second Zelda 1 and 2, Mario 1, 2, and 3, and Dragon Warrior 1 through 4.
Pro Wrestling was fun too.

Super Mario 3 is such a great game, I got the Game Boy Advance version just so I could play it anywhere. I honestly think it may be one of the 5 greatest games of all time. The original Super Mario Bros. is right there with it.

There’s a version of RBI Baseball available on the Net that features 2K6 rosters and all 30 teams (split across 3 ROMs.) Interesting to play. If you want to find it, I’ve given you what you need to Google for.

I have 40+ NES games I’ve collected over the past couple of years to go along with my toaster NES and my toploader.

I liked Blaster Master too, but there was a part that I couldn’t get past. Not that I couldn’t beat a boss, but that I couldn’t navigate the tank further. I think that this got mentioned in another thread.

Although I haven’t played all of them, **Lou’s** list looks pretty good. I probably could have spent the rest of my life playing only Final Fantasy and SMB3.

You may not download a ROM unless you already own the cartridge for the game, and/or have been given explicit permission to do so by the publisher. Failure to abide by these rules may result in a fine or imprisonment.

Just thought I should let you know.

Dragon Warrior 1-4
Megaman 1-6
Blaster Master
Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros 1-3 (and the Japanese SMB 2)
Low G Man
Final Fantasy 1-3 (the latter two were never released in the states)
Contra and Super C
Metroid
Bionic Commando

As an aside, there were somewhere in the range of 750-800 NES games released in the US. How many of those do we remember today, and how many are still worth playing?

I don’t know that the idea you can download a ROM if you own the original cartridge holds legal water. It seems likely that it would, given that you’re allowed to tape TV programs, but it may not be something you want to count on.

Am I really the first person to mention River City Ransom? It’s an excellent beat-em-up with a thousand amusing little touches.

Magic of Scherezadde is an interesting and underrated NES RPG, as is Earthbound 0 (if you can find it; it’s not available legally). If you’re into Final Fantasy-style games, check out the fan translations of 2 and 3. Faxanadu is interesting in that it’s probably the first console RPG ever made (depending on how you define the term), but the game itself is only so-so.

No one has mentioned **Super Dodge Ball**? Shame on ya.
Legend of Zelda 1 & 2, Double Dragon, Mega Man 2 & 3, Track and Field, Tetris, Blades of Steel were all great.

I was also partial to Maniac Mansion and Duckhunt. I am a fucking champion at Duckhunt. We used to play it in college as a drinking game. I stomped people at that game, even if I was too drunk to hold up my own arm. God, I miss Duckhunt.

**The Legend of Zelda** –Not only a fun adventure game, but one that let you save your progress when you died, which wasn’t that common back then.

**The Super Mario Series** –Especially 3. Fun, fun, fun. Possibly the best of the whole franchise.

**Mike Tyson’s Punch Out** –Before the ear-biting, woman-raping and general craziness, there was this. My favorite opponent was the rotund fellow who for some unknown reason had his belly button taped over. Look for Mario in a cameo. Good times.

**Tetris** –Best. Time-waster. Ever.

**Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles** –Just 'cause I was a fan.

Does anyone remember **T&C Surf**? That was one bizarre game. And difficult.

_Defender Of The Crown_. Damn, I had a lot of fun with that game.
