Netflix for one month, recommend some original programming

Big Mouth is awesome. Very graphic and crude, but a very honest look at puberty.

I recommend Stranger Things, Travelers, Black Mirror (including Bandersnatch), and Sense8. Not sure if Travelers will continue for another season or not.

The OA is good as a standalone (but watch for a season 2 later this year maybe), but the ending puts off a lot of people. Same for The Haunting of Hill House–excellent show, but with an ending that not everybody loves.

A Series of Unfortunate Events is three seasons, and it sticks pretty close to the books, though there are some more modern updates to some of the jokes (and a great intro song!). Watership Down is much the same, sticking close to the source material, but the animation isn’t that great (the voice acting, though, is superb!)

My girlfriend likes Mindhunter, but I haven’t watched it yet. Same for Dumplin’.

Bright has been out for a while, and I enjoyed it, but it’s not in my list of favorites. Bird Box seems to be big right now, but we haven’t seen it yet. Haven’t seen Altered Carbon yet, either.

I also use Netflix to watch old episodes that I can’t find anywhere else, like the entire series for Supernatural (don’t miss “Scoobynatural”), Cheers, and Frasier.

I think that Person of Interest and Limitless might float your boat, if you haven’t seen them already. I think both entire series are still on Netflix, but I don’t know whether you can find them anywhere else or not. Older but highly bingeable!

The actual point of Person of Interest kinda sneaks up on you–the plot seamlessly moves from this thing to this other thing. Limitless originated as a movie of the same name, but you don’t need to see it to enjoy the series (I’ve never seen the film).

Unfortunately, licensing rules are different in Canada and they dropped Supernatural and some other CW shows. :frowning:

I had rewatched them all but my son was at season 10 when they pulled them and was pissed. It’s odd too, because it’s practically a Canadian show anyway.

I’ve noticed a couple of series that have disappeared before I got around to watching them.

I’m sure your free month is up, but for anybody else who’s looking for something to watch on Netflix, try Russian Doll. Here’s the trailer.

It’s essentially Groundhog Day in eight half-hour episodes. It’s funny, touching, somewhat insightful, and each episode was, to me, better than the last.

The first ten minutes reminded me a little of the Straight Dope board (even with a banned troll standing outside in his socks…)

Apparently, I’m the only person in the whole world who loved the Watership Down remake.

Gotta check that out. But for awesome (and occasionally confusing) German drama, for my money you can’t beat Babylon Berlin, a lavishly and magnificently produced police/mystery/thriller series set in late-20’s Weimar Germany.

There’s an English dubbed version but I think the original German dialogue with English subtitles is better. Improves your German fluency too.

I’ll say 500,000% black mirror.

I liked altered carbon’s premise, but there was a lot of unnecessary bits to pad out the series, I felt. But I did watch all of it, and enjoyed it.

Mind hunters was pretty good.

Stranger Things is fun, though maybe not as great as everyone else says. But again, I watched it all, and look forward to more.

Bojacks is good, as is F is for Family

Matt groening’s Disenchanted was great, though the first few episodes aren’t. But I’ve watched em all 3 times now.

Skip the OA. Just trust me.

More on the OA. First few episodes you’ll think I’m a braying jackass (if you don’t already). By mid season, you’ll be sure of it. Then like ep 7 or 8, you’ll begin to see what I mean. And at the very end you’ll forever 100% trust everything I ever tell you ever again.

I liked it. It was good to have it longer with room to breathe. It was still dark, and was very well performed, and the animation was very good. The landscape was pretty but a bit boring, though. I also struggled to keep track of which rabbit was who, especially in the night scenes, but that was a minor criticism.

Umbrella Academy was good. Not great, but good. It drags at times, but the high points are fantastic.

I very much enjoyed Wormwood, a 6-part docudrama about Project MKUltra, but it’s very serious and very dark.

Lots of good shows mentioned, but if I were to highlight a specific “can’t miss” show that has few peers, it would be Black Mirror. There may be better shows, or shows that are more to your taste, but this is the one that’s a legit new experience. (Yes, I know it’s basically the Twilight Zone, but still.)

For shows that are more traditional, in no particular order, I loved Narcos, The Crown, The OA, Stranger Things and 13 Reasons Why.

Don’t sleep on the Documentary series either. Making a Murderer, The Keepers and The Staircase are all engrossing, if a little over-long at times.

Abducted in Plain Sight - a documentary on Netflix, about a pedophile who targets, grooms, and abducts a young girl from a family he is friends with. Of course the pedophile himself is reprehensible, but the really frustrating part of the whole thing is how the parents allowed themselves and their daughter to be manipulated by this guy. It’s kind of incredible. I was yelling at them on the TV screen.
