Netflix Inventory Shrinking?

I wish they would limit their “Saved” titles to mean “movies that haven’t yet been released on DVD”, meaning mostly those that are in theaters now and maybe “never before issued on DVD,” classic movies. Not “we might have this title on disc…someday!” Say, it has to be tagged in your database with an actual release date, if only month and year, not to exceed one year’s time. And then if the studio doesn’t release it, take it out of the database!

I have also noticed movies I’ve already seen and rated being designated as “Saved”. Does this mean there is a newer, fancier edition coming out and they’re replacing their old editions? Or does it mean that all their copies of relatively obscure (but good) titles like The Governess and La Femme Nikita are worn out or lost and they’re trying to get them replaced? (Looking at Amazon, I see that both of these titles have been “discontinued by the manufacturer.”) Couldn’t they get a used copy somewhere? I don’t get it.

Has anyone else noticed a significant slowdown in turnaround?

I’ve got the “one-at-a-time, unlimited” plan and have maintained a pretty steady two-DVDs-a-week pace for long stretches. (Mail Monday; they get Tuesday and send me the next; I get Weds. and watch; mail Thursday; they get Friday and send me the next; I get Saturday and watch, mailing the following Monday – lather, rinse, repeat.)

I was gone for a couple of weeks, and watched the DVD that was waiting for me on my return, mailing it back the next day. They got it last Friday and said they mailed a DVD that day; I didn’t get it Saturday (holiday), but also didn’t get Monday – got it Tuesday. Hm, thought I. Returned it Wednesday – they didn’t report getting it till today (Friday). I may get the next DVD tomorrow, or maybe not till Monday.

I didn’t really think all that much about this – but I had coffee with a friend yesterday, and part of the chit chat was his asking “Have you noticed Netflix slowing down?” (I was the one who originally got him to sign up, making me responsible for everything they do.)

Has anyone else noticed a slowdown, or is this just one of those things?

I think this is just their policy of dragging their feet a little if you’re watching and returning their movies a little too quickly. At some point, they start losing money on people like you.
