> …And what [is] the fine is for traveling 187,000 miles per second in a 186,000 miles per second speed zone?

The fine (as of December 2010 anyway) is negative ten million Swedish kronor plus negative one shiny gold medal and negative some piece of paper of indeterminate worth.

There are several ways to avoid the fine, mind you, according to precedent. If you are Jean-Paul Sartre in the year 1964 then you can straight-out decline the fine in true, Sartorial fashion. If you are Le Duc Tho in 1973 you can fuck Henry Kissinger for the whole fine and walk away clean “owing to the situation in Vietnam”.

Alternatively, you can be absolved of the fine by a higher, totalitarian power, as in these three cases: Richard Kuhn, Adolf Butenandt and Gerhard Domagk, each of whom were kindly absolved of their incurred penalty by their ever-loving fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. If your own beloved leader is a little less on-the-ball, then you can cave in to overwhelming pressure and have the fine revoked after-the-fact by Joseph Stalin, providing your name is Boris Pasternak and you were fined 1958.

It possible to avoid being fined, and if you have been paying attention, then you will have reasoned out that under no circumstances should you spend a short amount of time as a small-time community organizer in Chigaco, as you will be fined out-of-hand and for no reason whatever.

> Must say I’m disappointed too. However I console myself knowing the Universe is expanding faster than the speed of light and we haven’t explained that. For those who wonder what I mean, the edge of the Universe is outside the 13.7 billion year age we currently calculate. There are galaxies expanding away from us so fast that we will never see their light. Think of it as a black balloon outside the visible balloon of the known Universe. Probably about 16.5 billion lightyears away.

No, this is straightforwardly explicable within general relativity; nothing is moving within space at a speed greater than c, so there’s no paradox here. ([Wiki](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faster-than-light#Universal_expansion) has a bit of an explanation.)

Ok, I accept that. Hyperinflation of the early Universe was faster than C so I apologise and humbly withdraw… 😃
