What color are the ANC politicians mentioned in the OP’s article?

For instance -

> [@](#):
>
> …the visiting political boss, Mosebenzi Joseph Zwane, sold them on his latest deal: a government-backed dairy farm that they, as landless black farmers, would control. They would get an ownership stake in the business, just by signing up. They would go to India for training, all expenses paid. To hear him tell it, the dairy would bring jobs to the impoverished, help build a clinic and fix the roads.
>
> “He said he wanted to change our lives,” said Ephraim Dhlamini, who, despite suspicions that the offer was too good to be true, signed up to become a “beneficiary” of the project. “This thing is coming from the government, free of charge. You can’t say you don’t like this thing. You must take it.”

I doubt a BLM activist would be pacified when I point out that many or most police shootings are of whites, so it is quite multi-racial.

If you don’t see what’s ridiculous in comparing the BLM movement to African politicians then I don’t think there is much to discuss.

Kind of a non-sequitur, isn’t it? What does BLM have to do with US foreign aid? It like saying “Based on the missile strikes in Syria, I would have thought the Nationals would shore up their bullpen.”

Well, I’d just like to express relief about the level of concern of the millions of dollars in American foreign aid being spent for things like providing AIDS drugs to sick South Africans, because the South African government is so corrupt; and we’re all fine with the hundreds of billions of dollars spent annually in corrupt states like Illinois or West Virginia. Our priorities are truly straight.

I’m trying to understand what a Swedish fighter plane has to do with this…I can’t figure it out. Does the Swedish defense industry have a reputation for graft?

Anyway, corruption is everywhere. _Everywhere._ It is absolutely rampant in the United States. It is rampant everywhere. Why pick on South Africa?

Details [here](https://sites.tufts.edu/corruptarmsdeals/2017/05/05/the-south-african-arms-deal/). It was BAE rather than Saab that seems to have been the major player in the bribes involving the Gripens( which was part of a package involving BAE Hawks ), with Saab disavowing any knowledge of the deal.

Yep :). Considering there has been multiple hints of bribery around the Gripen, a grain or two of salt is probably warranted when reading Saab statements( or that of any arms manufacturer, really ).

Estimated by whom? The people running it?
The NIH is critical of some aspects, because it funds some areas and makes others “aspects” of healthcare less sexy.
Even so, a program that is well-directed and monothematic (medicine for a specific disease) is a good thing and easier to control than others, but we can’t lose sight of unintended consequences.

No, it was internal. As proof, however, no area in Peru that receives UNICEF help has ever left the condition the triggered the help.

Yes. However, talking about the misuse of farm aid in North Dakota doesn’t help to further the discussion on “appropriate management and distribution of foreign aid” Furthermore, saying that there are other instances of corruption within the US simply derails the (very) specific topic.

The topic is broadly “I don’t want my tax dollars wasted on corruption in Africa” pointing out that they’re getting wasted locally (and also, not really in Africa) is hardly off topic.

It really is off topic though. I mean, I agree foreign aid waste is trivial compared to other government waste, but in your definition it’s perfectly fine to bring up the Pentagon wasting money in my corn subsidies rant thread.

But that is the implication – either intentionally or accidentally – of many of the posts here: that the U.S. foreign aid is lining the pockets of corrupt politicians in South Africa. Since the U.S. doesn’t just hand over millions of cash to the government (especially considering the poor U.S.-RSA relations nowadays), nobody should just assume that this is happening.

> [@](#):

There’s been audits of the program by numerous agencies, including the independent Government Accountability Office that found significant decreases in mortality (including a 20% improvement between 2005 and 2011), while also pointing out areas that need better management. These assessments contradict your unsupported opinion that “next to nothing” has improved in Africa.

> [@](#):

I am shocked – shocked, I tell you – that you can’t provide proof that UNICEF regards itself as just wasting everyone’s time and money. You could truly bowl me over with a feather.

As far as your “proof,” I can point out that national security in Europe continues to be a problem, so I guess that’s “proof” that World War II was a waste of time. Right?

Since nothing about this OP invites discussion of the entire U.S. budget, I don’t believe you. You are engaging in “whataboutism” that is very selectively disparaged around here.
