I am what we call ‘post-theist’. c) I love Texas, but I just have to shake my head at some of the chuckleheads in this state. What really gets me is that so few of you seem to grasp that my original post was about new-agers and their disrespect for the spiritual and cultural customs of other people.

I agree, and notice they seem to go for a cheap, co-opted version, of what they assume is the real thing.
For example, I spoke with a traditional native American elder, who shared an experience where new agers, attempting to learn traditional spirituality from a native ceremony, showed total disrespect and immodesty to the group of actual natives.
The new agers seemed confused that their own ideas of primitive dance, dress, and behavior, was not going on with the natives in attendance at the ceremony; but that did not stop them from acting out their own wild and naked treatment of the subject.
And this to the shock of the natives, who later laughed and laughed at the antics of the silly white people.

Georgia along with Tennessee and the Carolinas are part of the Tactical BBQ Command.

Whoa… my family were given animal names when I was little (Sauk tribe).

Mine was **Running Deer**. No brainer: as the littlest kid in school, I learned to outrun the bullies.
My dad was given **Fast Buck**. Someone had a sense of humor: he was a banker.
Dad thought that was funny, so he got to recommend a related name for my mom:\*\* Easy Doe\*\*.

I have to tell my goofy name story again. One day a bunch of us were sitting around bored, and we decided to pick out “Native American” names for ourselves. Mine was “Dances for Donuts” and one of my friends picked “Runs With Scissors”.

The next day, equally bored. I answer a phone call and said, “Registration office. This is Dances for Donuts” and without so much as a pause the caller asks, “May I speak to Runs With Scissors?” I was completely flabbergasted. It turned out the caller was my friend’s mom, and had gotten the whole story and the names the night before, and was sharp enough to pick up on it instantly.

Only time I ever fell in love with a woman without ever meeting or even seeing her.

People, people, people! Let us put aside our differences and find strength in that which unites us. Slow-cooked tender meat with spice and sauce is delicious whether it’s got vinegar or tomatoes, with or without slaw. Put aside the invective and pick up the paper plate and napkin. Lay down your arms, because it’s difficult to eat a pork sandwich one-handed.

Yeah…no.

We can align with Memphis. And KC. It’s not real BBQ, but they have the right idea, sorta. We can forgive some heresy, but there are limits. But Georgia? hell no. The only way you are going to get BBQ there is if we ship it to you.

Good BBQ doesn’t need any sauce.

And while what you say about pork sandwiches is true, it has nothing to do with BBQ. A BBQ sandwich should be beef.

You have some argument against the proposition that followers of bronze age mythologies cause more harm to society than a few new age tourists? You got some argument that politicians in the USA don’t all have to dance the bronze-age jig to get elected? You got some argument that bronze-age nutters don’t try and impose their morality and exercise control over women’s bodies more cogent than an emoticon?

From the Norwegian christian terrorist, through anti-abortionists through to Al-Q I see bronze-age nuttery killing people by the thousands.

My argument is that your post is one of those anti-kitten-killing posts people always need to post whenever someone complains about puppy kicking. As if you’re not allowed to complain about both.

I have done exactly this, the reply I got was it doesn’t work exactly that way and I would have to be accepted and brought along by people who are part of NA spirituality, basically become part of their community, live with them as them.

I say it ‘doesn’t exactly work that way’, because as I understand how it works, because I did ask back then, that asking set thing into motion for the time where I was able to live with them and be mentored in their ways. All praise the Great Spirit 😃

Yes, and I see humanist-centered political systems killing people by the _millions_ in a much shorter period of time. I wonder why this is never pointed out?

Not once? Never? Is your internet-fu failing you?

Could we stop arguing about what’s more important than new agers sucking and get back to talking about how new agers suck.

ETA: of course it’s possible that I may have been whooshed, since the claim seems to come up almost as often as the anti-religious one.

It can happen this way Kanicbird.
I was at a Chumash sweat lodge ceremony, when some new age people showed up, and asked to go into the ceremony.
The Chumash were very cool about them just wandering in, and politely OKd the outsider participation.
The traditional people seem to be in the moment, for the most part.
And, IMO, they do not seem to exclude, or have hard and heavy rules for mentorship and involvement;
except maybe for the scam guru types, that might be looking for a financial reward for “training” you to become an Indian.
The Chumash Elders, rather tend to view accidents in fate, as probably something meant to happen, so the wandering new agers were made welcome.
On the other hand, the Sun Dance at Rosebud is very hard to get into, if you are just showing up.
This makes sense, because otherwise, the ceremony gets packed with tourists, and the curious
making the Shaman into a showman.

Just like the 'evangelical bible thumpers" who want THEIR religion written into law (blue laws, dry counties, moral “values”, “family values”, puting their bullshit on state initiative ballots, etc etc etc.)

Here is a novel idea. Mind your own fvcking business. It’s a free country, They can live where they want and believe what they want. If their very presence in “your” state is such a hardship, maybe you should move. the. fvck. out.
