“Most Ornate” is in the eye of the beholder. The “caribou-like” additions to the top of the frill are something new to me, but is it really “more ornate” than a **Pentaceratops** or a **Styracosaurus**? (Both known from before my birth)

> Pentaceratops ("five-horned face") is a genus of herbivorous ceratopsid dinosaur from the late Cretaceous Period of what is now North America. Fossils of this animal were first discovered in 1921, but the genus was named in 1923 when its type species, Pentaceratops sternbergii, was described. Pentaceratops lived around 76–73 million years ago, its remains having been mostly found in the Kirtland Formation in the San Juan Basin in New Mexico. About a dozen skulls and skeletons have been uncover...

> Styracosaurus (/stɪˌrækəˈsɔːrəs/ sti-RAK-ə-SOR-əs; meaning "spiked lizard" from the Ancient Greek styrax/στύραξ "spike at the butt-end of a spear-shaft" and sauros/σαῦρος "lizard") is an extinct genus of herbivorous ceratopsian dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous (Campanian stage) of North America. It had four to six long parietal spikes extending from its neck frill, a smaller jugal horn on each of its cheeks, and a single horn protruding from its nose, which may have been up to 60 centimeters...

So the key pair of features of the triceratops family tree were probably more evolved for rutting and courtship display, rather than direct predator defense. Nice fossil sample.

Speaking of the triceratops family tree, the Utah State Natural History Museum has a cool “wall o’ skulls”:

Man, the Utah State Natural History Museum has really changed since I lived in SLC. I used to stop in frequently during lunchtime. But it dodn’t look as cool as this
