You’ll notice that mom, dad, James, the principal, and the cops are all fairly smooth-looking. Interestingly, so is the TV reporter, so I guess he’s an ethical, god-fearing kinda guy. I think the illustrator does that since, y’know, black people all sorta look alike and you need to be able to tell who will set you on the Right Path. ---

Most fundies I’ve known believe in some sort of shaky concept of “age of accountability” with all responsibility for sin falling on their parents or guardians. They sin, because they are sinners, but they are too young to really understand their actions and consequences, so there is no eternal damnation for grabbing someone’s quarter, postage stamp, or paperclip. I am having trouble figuring out why the devil would make a deal with anyone in the first place, if he gets their soul anyway? Is he hoping that Denzel will suddenly decide to be honorable, and keep his part of the bargain? “Sorry Ma, but I made a promise. I can’t back out on a contract!” Is anyone else seeing the fundamental problem with this? ---

The Devil is the one getting ripped off. First, he gives Denzel fame and fortune in return for something he already had–his soul. Then, Mama butts in, and despite his deal, he loses the soul anyway. He has no recourse. The Devil needs a better lawyer, which is surprising, being that he lives in Hell and all that. ---

I always like the Chick tracts that are drawn by that guy, whoever he is. The ones that Chick himself illustrates in his childish looking and sloppy drawing style - like Evil Eyes - always disappoint. You wouldn’t last long in the Inquisition! 🙂 As detailed in the Malleus Maleficarum, the handbook used by all inquisitors, one of the first questions they would ask a suspected witch was, “Do you believe in the power of Satan and witchcraft?”. One might naturally think the safe answer was no. One would be very wrong. It was rank heresy to deny the power of the Devil, you would be contradicting Holy Writ (There’s a witch in the Bible, the Witch of Endor, and Satan is shown many times in it to have great powers)). To the stake with you! Of course, answering yes didn’t help you much either, (“Interesting, so you believe in the power of witchcraft, eh?”) but then the whole trial was a farce anyway. ---

However, I tend to actually read what’s written, and I try to think things through. I don’t always succeed, but I do TRY. Jack Chick’s target audience (the tract buyers, not the readers), however, firmly believes that if they repeat stuff that’s in the Bible, and if they believe hard enough, that this will be sufficient to accomplish a great many things. You can’t convince these folks with logic and reasoning. I read a quote somewhere that said something like “You can’t reason a man out of a position that he didn’t use reason to arrive at.” I’m sure I’m mangling it, but you get the idea. ---
