You gotta admit, Jack Chick seems to enjoy bashing Halloween a bit too much. The scary drawings. The morbid stories. Flirting with the supernatural. Jack Chick loves Halloween. He just hasn’t accepted it and come out of the closet. ---

You know, I’ve never seen a Chick tract in real life. Just read about them here. And yet just this week I encountered an honest-to-gosh, full length Chick book. It’s called “He Came to Set the Captives Free,” by Deborah Brown, M.D. (she says she’s an M.D., at any rate), published by Chick Publications. I can find no on-line link to it, but perhaps it will be in your local library (as it is in mine). Basically it tells how Satan and his minions are all around us. They’re in the government. They’re in the police force. They’re in the administration of the hospital where Deborah Brown, M.D., works. They were secretly sacrificing patients to Satan until our heroine caught them at it. As Deborah reports it, she has been waging a one-woman war against the forces of darkness for years now. My favorite chapter was the one where she describes how she was attacked by a werewolf (yes, a werewolf), which was sent by Satan to kill her because she’d gotten in his way for the last time. Werewolves are Satan’s hitmen, evidently. When that didn’t work, Satan himself actually came to visit her. No cartoons, but it was typical of what I’ve seen of Chick tracts. Lots of **BOLD LETTERS IN ALL CAPS!** Multiple exclamation points!!! Lots of wild assertions, with Bible verses as the only evidence offered. I wonder if these stories are deliberate lies, or is this woman truly delusional? It would be funny, if I didn’t have the unsettling feeling that she believes every word she’s written. And of course, the obligatory swipe at Catholics: Don’t use a crucifix. It’s just a fetishistic idol, and you’re invoking demons if you hold one. ---

Handing out religious tracts for Halloween? Geez… Some of the kids I’ve seen out T-or-T’ing act like they’ll egg and TP your house if you have the temerity to give them only ONE fun-size candybar each instead of letting 'em pick their own handful. Give 'em religious tracts? They’d overturn your car and set it on fire. And probably hit your lawn with paraquat for good measure. ---

Serious analytical question about “Framed”… This one did indeed look like a quality piece of religious zealot propaganda, as do many Chick products. BUt I admit I got bored halfway through the tract and skipped over most of the bible story to see the guy on his knees at the end (always my favorite part). Sure enough, there he was, bent double and a-tremblin’ with Righteous Fear of the Lord. But wait! He didn’t do anything wrong in the tract! Somebody else did wrong, but our guy was innocent, and yet, there he is at the end, kneelin’ and confessin’ and weepin’ just like the drug addicted satanist priest who lived with the rockin’ gay abortion doctor in some other tract. I mean, what the fuck? Our guy was innocent, I tell ya! Innocent! What does all this tell us about Chick’s view of humanity? :rolleyes: I can’t believe I’m wasting my 600th post on Jack Ass Chick. ---

I love collecting these things- Chick tracts never seem to let me down when I need a good laugh. In fact, if someone is passing them out, I usually ask if they have any different ones! I didn’t think of checking with a Christian bookstore- I’ll have to do that and add to my (small) collection. Oh, the wackiness! Zette ---

Sometimes Chick makes me laugh, then there are other times when I just get disturbed by his message. The idea that you can kill and rape and do all kinds of evil things you can make it to heaven by a last second prayer,while good folk burn. bugs me. Then I look at the losers Chick expects to go to heaven and I think, If that is what the afterlife is about Better to fry in hell on my terms than live in Heaven under Chicks. Then I laugh myself silly when I realize he’s just nuts and I got bothered by nonsense. ---

Another thing-in The Little Princess, a little girl goes trick or treating-as her dying wish, and it’s not seen as bad…weird. Pittsburgh has such a large Catholic population, so it’s doubtful Chick tracts are very common. Unless you go to Brother Dan and Sister Ann, maybe. ---
