It’s actually kind of reassuring, and goes to show our essential commonality and humanity. No matter what color your skin, no matter what your ethnicity, no matter what culture you come from… if you’re a racist, there’s something wrong with you. ---

Damn, he’s been here since last fall and he seemed fine up until just a few days ago, and then suddenly he just went wacko as hell. Based on what you just posted, I’m thinking it must have been the criticism that Obama has been coming in for over Libya that sent him over the edge. ---

I’m still amused that he thought I was a racist and a bigot because I said that the word “nigger” is an awful slur that should never be used to describe anybody, ever. I said the same thing about “kyke” and I admit I am somewhat saddened to learn that I am not also a Jew-hater. I am surprised to learn that not only am I Irish and probably a member of the IRA (not a bad set of accomplishments for a Jewish guy from Long Island), but Dewey Finn is also my illegitimate brother. Mom!?!? ---

On a serious note, I had a roommate in college who honestly thought that the proper term was “Jewish” since he had only ever heard the word “Jew” used as a slur and didn’t think it was a real word. ---

That’s not an unusual belief. We had a thread about how calling someone a Jew just kind of feels wrong to some people… in IMHO, a couple of months back, I think. Plus, it’s the same thing with equivalent constructions for other racial descriptors. I’d probably raise an eyebrow if I heard someone referred to as “a black”, “a white”, or “a Chinese” (though not “an Asian”). Actually, that works for definite articles, too - “the blacks” also sounds wrong (though “blacks” by itself is fine). ---

I think I’ve mentioned this in the past, but some journalism classmates of mine (mid-1990’s) were absolutely incredulous at the professor’s contention that the term “Jew” was not considered a slur, and was an acceptable noun to use in news articles. ---
