Haven’t seen any threads on the board about the [upcoming Disney film Tomorrowland](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sH0__SpV88). It looks pretty darned cool! I’m not sure about Clooney - it doesn’t really look like a role I would’ve thought of him for. It’s also got Hugh Laurie, and was directed by Brad Bird (the Iron Giant, the Incredibles, Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol). ---

I’m there - I wasn’t disappointed by the last theme park attraction Disney turned into a movie (wait, I’m not sure if _Haunted Mansion_ or _Pirate of the Caribbean_ came first. I mean _Pirates_, obviously) and [Raygun Gothic](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raygun_Gothic)/Googie is my jam. Yay! for a return to the [paleofuture](http://paleofuture.gizmodo.com/) visions of the _Popular Mechanics_ of my youth. _Meet The Robinsons_, _Jimmy Neutron_, _The Incredibles_, even the _Aeon Flux_ movie all have this styling to some degree, and I love it - much better than everything being grimdark, wet, grey and dirty. _Alien_, _Mad Max_ and _Blade Runner_, so much to answer for 🙂 ---

It’s not clear that this movie is based on the Disney attraction Tomorrowland. It was originally titled 1952 and only retitled after it was well into development. Also, the original _Pirates of the Caribbean_ was only loosely based on that attraction. It had more to do with a video game originally. That would take a while to explain. It’s been discussed on the SDMB before. ---

A few points: 1. It looks pretty good by the trailer. 2. Whether or not it was intended to connect to the Disney space originally it is now. You’re produced by Disney and you get named ‘Tomorrowland’? You’re attached no matter what. Disney wouldn’t allow that to happen without forethought and planning. 3. Anyone else think there’s a _quid pro quo_ here? Bird gets to do this one, then agrees to do Incredibles 2? ---

So far we’ve had: Tower of Terror (1997) Mission to Mars (2000) The Country Bears (2002) The Haunted Mansion (2003) Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) One hit and four misses. If you count the Pirates sequels, one hit and seven misses. So the odds for Tomorrowland are not good. ---

Tomorrowland isn’t even a ride, it’s a section of various Disney parks. So I guess the movie could be about standing in line with your kids in the Florida sun. ---

I would generally think this to be true … but I was surprised in this case because the hot new franchise on Disney Jr. is an animated show called _Miles from Tomorrowland_. I found it odd, I guess, for Disney to have had two productions in the pipeline with such similar names. In fact, when I first heard there was a new Disney movie called _Tomorrowland_, I assumed it was an animated film set in the same world as the TV show. ---

I got a pretty heavy Ayn Rand vibe from _The Incredibles_, and this line from the _Tomorrowland_ trailer gives me pause: “What you saw was a place where the best and brightest people in the world came together to actually change it.” Hmm. ---
