Southern coastal Maine here (York/Eliot/Kittery) here, saying “meh”… I’ve lived through the infamous '76 and '78 blizzards, bring it on, looks to me like the storm system has gotten disorganized from last night We’re set for preps, and the backup generator sits ready… I may do the unthinkable tomorrow and use a vacation day, mainly because my car is in the shop for rust perforation repair, and the loaner, a '13 VW Jetta SE absolutely SUCKS in the snow (I may write a 2 week review of it after I get my car back next week) for three reasons; 1; it’s a sludgebox automatic 2; the “all season” tires have a straight tread pattern that bogs up with snow far too easily 3; the bloody traction control CANNOT BE TURNED OFF! #3 is an inexcusable design flaw for any location that gets significant snowfall, like the northern USA, or maybe even…Germany? They get snow there too (yes, I know the Jetta is “Hecho en Mexico”) and when you consider the Jetta is basically a Golf with a trunk grafted on, it’s strange how drastically the driving dynamics are altered, as the Golf is amazingly good in the snow If I had my car, I’d consider going into work tomorrow, even in this supposed “blizzard”, but in the Jetta? No bloody way. ---

Once again, this California expat finds himself amused at how hardy, tough old Nwinglanders can (1) find themselves blindsided and (2) panic stupidly at something (3) I knew about and prepared for a couple of days ago with no particular rush or hassle. I went to the grocery store last night for a couple of basics and spent 20 minutes being amused at people stocking bottled water, pressed firelogs and toilet paper as if for end times. I need to go dust off the generator and give it a quick maint check. Yes, the whole-house Generac that - according to the neighbors four years ago - “the doctor installed years ago; I think it’s run about fifteen minutes since then _chuckle chuckle_.” Three major storms and over 14 days of power outage later, they aren’t laughing any more and have their own gas-powered beasts to drag out and tend to in the driveways. While I, poor dumb sunshine boy, start counting when the lights got out, to see if I can get to 30 before the 'ac kicks in automatically, restoring complete comfort. I’ve come to see FOSONE’s motto of “Land of Steady Habits” as most outsiders seem to: “We’re kinda dumb and stubborn, and we plan to stay that way.” See you on the other side. We’ll be watching movies. ---

My first blizzard! I went shopping yesterday, but Sunday is my designated day either way. The stores were packed, but nothing was depleted. I worry, so I spent last night going over the flashlights, water, etc. When I moved from California I just pretty much transplanted my earthquake kit, so nothing was missing. I’m picking my wife early from work tonight and I convinced her to stay home tomorrow. I think I’m going to stay home with the kid on Wednesday. No sense in letting the little one out. ---

What you’re seeing on radar are the outermost bands. It really hasn’t even begun to organize yet. It just hit the ocean near the Outer Banks in NC. Now is when the fun starts… ---
