In our American branch, the employees get 10 (maybe 11, not sure) holidays, besides their vacation. Some of them, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and fixed, and others are floating. This means that employees have the flexibility to take off certain religious holidays, whether Christian, Jewish, Hindu, etc. Still too warm here, but a lot less humid, which helps. Got all packed up to go to Zurich tomorrow evening to see Jerry Cantrell in concert. Never saw Alice in Chains as I wasn’t fond/familiar with their music at the time. Hope the place has good air conditioning, otherwise we’ll melt. Hotel does have AC, so I’m happy about that. Probably will sleep pretty good, especially after being up later for the concert. Speaking of which, probably should get myself organized and moving towards bed. The heat, plus the long days (just under 16 hours), is really messing with my sleep. ---

I managed to snag the handyman today and had him replace the air handler filter in the apartment. It was way too warm in here yesterday and when I checked the filter, I saw it was in really bad shape. Seems like it’s cooled down some now, so we should sleep better tonight. ---

Back from taking trash and recycling. I had to ask a nice young feller to latch down the bed cover on my truck, since I have weenie arms. It’s a combination of not-very-strong arms and having to reach pretty far into the bed of the truck. But he was taller with long, strong arms, so it’s all good now. Hey, I’ll play the old lady card when I need to! Then I went to put gas in the truck. $50 and it didn’t even fill half a tank. Not happy. After I parked the truck, I got out the hedge clippers and hacked back the wisteria and trumpet vines that were reaching out to grab you when you got into or out of the truck. That stuff grows like weeds!!! **FCD** is still at the boat, but I expect he’ll come home soon. I’ll just chill till then. ---

Afternoon all. Shopping-n-Sammich run have been completed and just got back from the gym, 1700 yards backstroke swimmin’ in just a bit over an hour, so I’m getting close to the one mile an hour mark. It’s 91F outside, so I don’t think I’ll be gong back out today. Might set up and water the front yard post-dinner. **Cookie** , glad the fix was easy. I need to change my internal air filter here at home, it’s been awhile. **Oopsie** , thanks for the list. I guess that gap from President’s Day (around 20 Feb to Memorial Day (about 30 May) is what I remember most. And I agree that making Presidents Day an electoral holiday would be good, but it will never happen (will forbear any political commentary in the MMP). Enjoy your concert, **Dicey** **Taters** , hope Polar gets to feeling better. And love the story of Adam and Gramps. **seanette** , columorbus is a pretty common salad in the midwest. It involves cucumbers, onions and a vinegar / water / sweetening / seasoning dressing and is akin to a fresh pickle. If you have some bell peppers, mushrooms or tomatoes that need to be used up, you can throw those in as well. I think that the name is likely from German or Polish. Love Toby’s poop face **Moooooom**! We get four designated paid holidays at my irkplace: new year’s, Memorial day, Independence day and Christmas. We do accrue a couple of days of PTO a month though. I have requested the fifth of July off this year because I would like to stay up after dark to watch the fireworks from the patio, if Nelson doesn’t get too scared (he’s less and less bothered by that kind of thing than he used to be). Irked, came home, walked Nelson and we visited with the guy next door and his poodles. I even let Nelson off leash for a tussle with Sully. Stay safe and healthy y’all! ---

Afternoon everyone! I’m currently in some small town in Georgia contemplating my bbq grill, and another beer from the cooler (but not in that order). Got the RV parked a few hours ago after way too much effort leveling on a poorly graded pad. But it’s good enough my drink doesn’t tip over and we’re not playing pool in here so it’ll do. Diesel’s around $5.60 / gallon here, so filled all the aux tanks so we can (theoretically) make it all the way home to DFW now. Hope everyone’s having a good Monday! ---

Remember that termite-y cedar we had cut down a couple of years ago? The biggest logs were still in the back yard. I’ve chopped some up from time to time. Today I spent my holiday chopping some more. There were at least ten of them, maybe a dozen. I cut the good wood into fireplace logs and put them in the shed. I chopped up the termite-y bits into campfire logs and took them out to the street. The third (or fourth?) wheelbarrow load, there was a guy loading the wood into his car. Another neighbour came by, walking his dog. He said he’d have to get some wood too. Since the wheelbarrow was full, I wheeled it down to the next street and dumped it where he wanted it. I told the first guy I had five more logs in the back yard. He came back and looked at them, and said he could bring his trailer around tonight. Re-SULT! I don’t have to chop them! Three and a half hours of chopping were enough for me. Since I have to go to Burien tomorrow, I decided to take the logs out to the street. Five trips with the hand truck. I was sweaty anyway, and it will save some time. I’m tired and maybe a little bit sore. I took some ibuprofen and had a shower. I feel good. 🙂 ---

Well, lab work from Friday has come back. LDL was bumping the high end of the range, but they’d already started me on Lipitor on Friday just based on my medical history. A1C 6.1, which apparently puts me in the “prediabetes” category, and statins can push one along the diabetes scale. Joy. GOTTA get more active, and I think I may have to give up Mt. Dew completely (once I finish off what I have), since I cannot stand the taste of the zero-sugar variety. Other carbs shouldn’t be a problem, I don’t think. We shall see. I inherited a Relion (Walmart house brand) blood glucose meter from DH when his doctor insisted on him using one with an app that can report to the doctor, now awaiting unexpired test strips. ---

Howdy Y’all! We’re home from men’s night over to the church house. ‘Twas a good crowd on hand. We laughed, we ate, we drank. We also solved all the world’s problems, but, as usual, no one listens to us so all the problems remain. I’ve been givin’ informal “lessons” about the goin’s on durin’ a typical service off and on for the past several months. This evenin’s “lesson” was on incense and how it is prepared for use on the very occasional Sundays we use it, plus Christmas Eve. It was the most fascinatin’ “lesson” since I explained [Asperges](https://www.episcopalchurch.org/glossary/asperges/#:~:text=The%20liturgical%20practice%20of%20sprinkling%20with%20holy%20water,Renewal%20of%20Baptismal%20Vows%20at%20the%20Easter%20Vigil.) and how to prepare the aspergillum. I am kind of a church nerd. **taters** glad Adam had a fun day with his “partner in crime.” I am sure the “partner in crime” enjoyed it just as much as Adam. **roadrunner** go you! **MOOOOOOM** I have no problem takin’ advantage of young muscle. Evening all. The Big Bowl O’Sallit was fine, but I dumped too much Ranch on it (hey, it’s Fat Free) and it got to soggy to finish. Still haven’t put the water out on the yard, another job for tomorrow, but I did finish my Sunday puzzles, so at least part of my mind is working. **Red** , I ran columorbus through Google and an earlier MMP thread you mentioned it on came up as the first reference. The salad sounds common, the name apparently is rare. **Yanker** , hope the fuel holds out, and safe travels to Big D. **Flyboy** , either it’s a lot cooler where you live or you must have the physique of Hercules to be chopping and carting that much wood. The guy came in his full-sized pickup, and loaded the five logs and the rest of the wood. No more work on my part! 🙂 He said he’s having a 4th of July party and was running low on wood. He’ll split the logs for that. ---

Government work doesn’t pay that well and comes with a whole bunch of bullshit. I am certainly not complaining that government workers got another holiday, the bennies are why I stuck it out. I do agree that Columbus Day needs to go away though. I mentioned the no mail thing to hubs yesterday but he forgot and went across the street to check it and managed to brush against something and came back in leaking. Do you guys know of any sites selling long sleeved kevlar shirts for causal wear? As to In Heaven There is No Beer song, I think you must have gotten so depressed at the first verse that you too busy crying in your beer to hear the rest. In heaven there is no beer, wine, sex or drugs. I’m glad there’s room in that hand-basket for us all. Last night I got my soft cheeses started and set my clock to get up when it was time to do the next part. Everything is now in the cave, doing a last bit of ripening before being picked up tomorrow. I think the sour cream tastes a little off, but hubs disagrees. I’ll point it out to my buyer and if she doesn’t want it, I will give it to a friend with chickens and make another batch which I will deliver myself. I have a reputation to uphold after all! I can’t see the street side of our back yard fence unless I make a point to walk around the privacy fence and look. This means I forget about it and yesterday I came home a different way and saw it. ICK! Today I got out there with the round-up, I’ll have to rake the dead weeds next week. Technically, that is part of the easement and is the County’s responsibility. Realistically, if we waited for the County to deal with it, I’d be seeing the weeds waving over the fence. Plus, I don’t want dry brush and weeds next to our wood fence. Last night hubs put a pork butt in the smoker. After it reaches the proper temp, he takes it out and wraps it in foil then puts it in a towel lined ice chest to rest for a couple of hours. Hubs likes to feed our cats people food. GG’s breeder didn’t feed his cats people food, he lived with them underfoot, teaching a bunch of mamas and kittens that bacon is good would be not wise. I suggested to hubs that maybe we shouldn’t teach GG to eat people food either. Of course hubs couldn’t do that and GG has learned that pig meat is good stuff. GG knew that there was pig meat in the ice chest and kept messing around with it until he managed to knock the lid off. Once the lid was gone, he figured out that towels were like blankets and might be able to be pawed aside. I’m a bad wife. I heard the lid hit the floor but knew that the towels were wrapped around the prize so waited to hear hubs. Then I laughed my “I told you” so laugh. ---

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. _YAWN_ ‘Tis 67 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 97 and N.O.S. for the day. Today is laundry day plus mowage will be accomplished this mornin’. High temps will be over a hunnert the next two days and we’re promised rain over the weekend, so mowage today is now a must. Much sloth shall follow, however. Sup shall be leftovers from Sunday so that will be easy. **JtC** GG shows signs of intelligence! That’s a smart kitty to figure out how to get to the pig meat! I tried to convince him to stay home from the boat today. I don’t’ think I was successful. But we shall see. At least we’re looking at low 80s again, so not oppressively hot.
