I wonder if this incident will dampen the spirits of all the techno-freaks who simply can’t wait to get in a car completely controlled by “The Cloud” (r).

This feature, which could also save my life, makes it marginally more difficult for people in general to be complete sociopathic animals, And That’s Terrible.

I for one would seek to disable it, not because I’d like to run into people and disappear though. I’m afraid that any system that can access the internet can be accessed by the internet. What’s stopping a hacker from sending “full speed ahead” or “engine off” signals to everyone’s car on the freeway at rush hour?

Turning off this feature wouldn’t protect against the threat you’re worrying about.

Not linking your phone to your car would help (although it’s not 100% foolproof. If someone can hack your phone to hack your car, they may well be able to hack your phone to exploit a vulnerability in your car’s Bluetooth stack and force the link to your car in the first place)

Not letting any internet-connected telephone within Bluetooth range of your car is the only way to be sure. Good luck with that.
