New Furniture...maybe

Well, last weekend was a very busy and somewhat expensive weekend for me. Saturday I ran down to Orting to look at a hall tree, came back home, had lunch, then went Lowes and spent lotso moolah; then to Wally World for a b-day present for a neighbor boy; then to Home Depot. Then back home for an hour or two, then out dinner.

Sunday morning we went to OCB for breakfast. It coincidentally happens to be located at the mall. After breakfast we HAD to go down the computer game store so hubby could buy a new computer game.

After that we needed to buy a poster board for my daughter for a school presentation, but on the way the way to THAT store we happened upon a furniture store. Mr. Taters stops and states, “Wow, looks like some nice stuff in there.” I was TOTALLY non-plussed. He then entered the store with me and the kiddos trailing behind. I have wanted new furniture for quite some time, but felt we shouldn’t spend the money just yet (yes, I am worry wart when it comes to money issues). Also, I want QUALITY, long-lasting stuff. No more “make-do” for me. Nosiree! So, I was willing to wait. Mr. Taters wasn’t exactly keen on getting some new furniture at this time either…before now, that is.

So, we wander through the store and I see some stuff I like. Surprise, surprise Mr. Taters does too! I have finally convinced him a sofa and two club chairs (one with an ottoman, and one that reclines) is what we should have and looks nicer.

So, we are INSTANTLY pounced upon by the saleslady who is showing us cloth swatches, and talking about deals, etc.

Hubby tells me it’s up to you, but why don’t you go ahead and get this stuff? He also told me to purchase new coffee and end tables. I was shocked, I tell you, shocked! However, I didn’t do it! Why not, you ask? Well, although the furniture was very nice and seemed well constructed, I was NOT impressed with the warranty. The upholstry has a good warranty, but the springs are only warrantied for five years.

So, this Friday, I will traipse on down to another furniture store of good repute and check them out. I will compare quality and warranties. THEN I will make my decision…and I will have NEW, PRETTY furniture that I am not embarrassed about any longer, that will go with my NEW, PRETTY house I bought last spring. YIPPEE!

I lead such a mundane life…I can’t believe I’m excited about this. :o

I SOOO want a new couch. The one we have is a bright red-orange, and was left behind by the previous tenants of this apartment (who were kind enough to have the super contact us ahead of time and ask if we wanted it). Since we didn’t have a couch when we moved in, we said yes. That was 2 years ago. It’s sagging, and the cushions are kind of flat, and it just isn’t that comfortable. We have let the cat use it as a scratching post, which means that when ever we do get a new couch, we’ll have to retrain her.

I also want a bed frame. Like, header and footer. We have a great queen sized matress, but no nice frame, and it drives me nuts. I also want a new coffee table, a new TV stand, and maybe a new book case and bedside table and…well, basically new everything.

The problem? I’m not working. I graduated in February, and haven’t been able to find work (actually been out of school since December). I’ve had a couple of interviews, but nothing’s worked out. My SO is still in school, until this April. He has decent savings, but certainly nothing on the scale of buying any new furniture! So I can’t even get the smallest of items right now! I’d also like to paint, but even though I have the time, we don’t have the money for it. At least the apartment is getting new windows soon - that minor renovation will probably promt at least an effort at reorganising this apartment!

Pick something really nice! Make your home as pretty as you want it to be - you’ll be glad you did! I just wish I was in your shoes!

I just finished furnishing the first room I’ve ever had entirely new stuff for (well, 90% new, there’s a desk that was just too useful to toss.) We moved here a few years ago on an absolute shoestring and gratefully furnished the place with college-student leftovers, since we moved in right at prime furniture recycling time. But now I have a nice book case, and a little sofa, and a proper desk chair, and the apple of my eye (and incidentally most expensive piece of furniture I’ve ever owned), a red velvet brocade chaise lounge!

It is just the most exciting thing to have new, nice furniture. Enjoy your comparison shopping! And mnemosyne, good luck with the job hunt, and subsequent couch hunt!

If you’re looking for recommendations for furniture stores, you might want to check out this guy. He has nice stuff at decent prices.

Thanks Hunter Hawk,

I am going to check out Newell Hunt in downtown Puyallup (I live on South Hill). They are supposed to have life time warranties, do stuff custom, and even offer free in-home consultations and measurements to make sure you will be TRULY happy with your purchase. All of this, and they are less expensive than the Old Cannery (supposedly). I will have to have a “look-see” to see if all of this REALLY true.

I suppose if I don’t find what I’m looking for there, I will widen and continue my search.

Oh…if you’re willing to go for custom work, you might also want to check out Jim Howe. He’s pricey (as might be expected for custom work), but it’s beautiful stuff.
