# New in spam trends: Converse Chuck Taylors

Getcher tennies off my St. Augustine, you damn kids!

Back in the day, my spam inbox filled up with offers for CHEEP V1agr@, Hot ‘n’ Horny Housewives, and a FREE Complimentary WII!!!1!

In 2009, in the new economy, all I’m gettin’ is come-ons for [Chuck Taylors](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Taylor_All-Stars).

Huh? Why Converse All-Stars? Why now?

Why, I remember, when I was a girl, my most prized footwear were my [black hi-tops](http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/classicsportshoes_2035_20366427), proudly purchased with babysitting money from Tri-State. (They were not quite as cool as Danna Logan’s [RED hi-tops](http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/classicsportshoes_2035_21362017), but still.) They had been cool in years before; they were cool again in years to come. Are they \*that cool \*again today? Are they cool enough to make the youth of today throw all caution to the wind, forget everything their parents warned them about the Internet, and click their way through to a fate worse than death?

Geez, what’s next – checkered [Vans](http://shop2.vans.com/wcsstore/Vans/images/products/EYEBWWB.JPG)?

Where have you been? Chucks are huge right now. And I’ve seen checkered Vans lately, too. Everything old is new again.

I’m 38 years old and had yellow high-top Chucks in the 80s. When I recently wore my black Chucks to work on a weekend, one of the 60-something year-olds loved my shoes because he had a white pair when he was younger.

They seem to come back in style every 20 years or so.

The difference this time around is that [Converse is really Nike](http://www.forbes.com/2003/07/09/cx_jw_0709nike.html). The brand was sold in 2003.

…and, like Nike, I find the craftsmanship somewhat less than awe-inspiring.
