New Orleans Finally Put on the Map

Not internationally. At least not as well-known as New York, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Boston, etc.

Americans tend to forget that for many people in the world, America is just one foreign country. How many cities do you know in Australia, France, India and China?

Well if people like Rog have finally taken note of New Orleans then there is a small sliver of silver in this great big black cloud. :frowning:

The setting for Rocky and our first seat of national government.

And didn’t that C.K. Dexter Haven fellow sing a duet with Frank Sinatra there? It’s what I have heard, anyway.

Grace Kelly and Kate Hepburn got in on a little bit of that action, too – or so the story goes.

Grace Kelly was never far from the action. I was wondering if you would pop in, Tracy.

Sure, I’ve read those vampire books you know?

I agree that New Orleans has always been “on the map”. Hell, it has a more distinct culture and heritage than most countries do. Jazz was invented there. Some of the best and most distinct food in the world - check. Legacy in literature - check. Distinct architecture - check. Several distinct accents found nowhere else - check. Mardis Gras - check. Legendary party city - check. One of the most popular vacation detsinations in the U.S. - Check. Largest port in the U.S…

My wife and I went to school in New Orleans (Tulane). My wife now works in international business and travels to Eurpope all the time. All of the Europeans that we deal with know about New Orleans and many if not most have been there themselves.

I am sure that many in Asia and elsewhere didn’t have the time or the means to visit but New Orleans was one the most famous, infamous, and notorious cities in North America.

It’s been on the map since at least 1814.

scowls at Zebra for getting that song started in his head…although I’m alternating between the real words and the one about the Girl Scouts

New Orleans was founded in 1718.

I think he’s too heavily influenced by another Johnny. Horton, that is.

And now the song is in my head, dammit.

I’m going to email Lee Greenwood so he can rewrite a new Battle of New Orleans song.

Unless
You give me ONE BILLION DOLLARS!

[holds pinky up to mouth]

counts out one billion dollars

That’s Zimbabwean dollars, though.

I think some of you are being a little hard on the OP.

Maybe he meant “New orleans is finally on the map for people who kinda-sorta know where New York is but still get Loas Angeles and San Francisco confused.”

Who needs Lee Greenwood?

In 2005 FEMA took a little trip
Along with Michael Brown down the might Mississipp’
We took Condoleezza and Harry Connick, too,
Rowed out to the SuperDome to see what we could do.

We dropped the ball and refugees kept a comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We had no plans so they began to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

We looked down the river and we seed the homeless come
And there must’ve been a hundred of ‘em beatin’ on the drum
They yelled so loud even Katie Coruic shuddered
We stood beside our microphones jus’ like we was struck dumb

We dropped the ball and refugees kept a comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We had no plans so they began to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Mayor Nagin said we got taken by surprise
We won’t evacuate till raindrops hit us in the eyes
We held our tongues till the water came a lappin’
Then we opened up our pie-holes really gave 'em . . . Well

We dropped the ball and refugees kept a comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We had no plans so they began to runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

That’s Cheesesteaks, Sir Roger.

I’d have to say that New Orleans has to be one of America’s most famous cities before Katrina. Personally, Next to NY, it’s my favorite. As for “putting it on the map,” What American cities would you consider on this mysterious “map” of yours?

Loud appluase,
Shouts of approval,
Showers of cash.

And Philly brand cream cheese.
