Many people just don’t like people who go to countries and don’t bother to try to speak the appropriate language. If the whitest German/Swedish/whatever people you could fiind arrogantly refused to even _try_ to speak English in a place where doing such is obviously appropriate, that would be just as annoying. I, personally, would attempt to learn enough of the language to get by if I were visiting a country, and of course go to great lengths to learn it if I were going to live in that society. Anyone who doesn’t do as much (Americans included) are arrogant and annoying. Or… I dunno, people shouldn’t learn English, because wherever they came from, their culture is superior to ours, because traditional American culture is the most boring and evil thing in the world, and we should be ashamed on ourselves for thinking anything different.
