Let’s stop saying, “I didn’t do anything but [insert three chores here]” or, “I’m so tired/sick/sick and tired that I only did [insert chores here]”.
“But” and “only” minimizes that fact that you did something, dammit! Let’s celebrate the little things we did do while we acknowledge what we didn’t do YET.
dangermom, good job getting dinner together at the last minute on top of getting your kidlet to school! AND you cleaned the bathroom!
Zsofia, you kept all your dishes clear and put away the groceries! Huzzah!
Mama Tiger, I’m so glad you got that organizing thing started, that can be overwhelming. AND you started the second bathroom, too! Good thing you have today to finish it.
TroubleAgain, you did laundry! I’m so jealous. That’s my Everest.
StarvingButStrong, I know what you mean! But congratulations for speaking up and getting your needs met. And you did show your husband where the sponge and counter spray are kept, right?
Lissla Lissar, good luck with your floor issues! I know you’ll make a great start today.
Sunspace, I’m so sorry to hear about the funeral. But those sound like good goals for the weekend.
Today’s jobs are to clean the dining room and clutter counter, and the car. With luck I’ll tidy up the schoolroom too–but probably I’ll try to get more done on that baby quilt instead. I’m excited about it and finished a bunch of small blocks last night, so now I only have the 3 complicated blocks to do and then I can put the top together. (Here is a picture of the quilt pattern I’m doing; mine is in soft batiks.)
Anyway, off to school. Time to give my daughter a spelling lesson.
Thanks. I barely knew the decedent, but, before I joined, he was active in an organisation of which I am now president, so I thought I’d show the flag there. Also, several friends who did know him will be there.
In other news, I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t even think much about the laundry; I just do it.
Okay, to revise my attitude: Today I’m doing my daily chores (which I’ve been very good about doing, probably because the rewards are so immediate and tangible!), start organizing my office, and finish the second bathroom.
This weekend I’ll continue decluttering my office and maybe tackle the dining/sewing room a bit. I have heaps of yarn and fabric hither and yon all over both rooms, so organizing that is a good first step towards cleaning two rooms in one fell swoop.
Oh, and with Papa Tiger’s help, we’re also going to move a few more things into the storage unit to clear up a bit more room – we’ve downsized furniture-wise as much as I feel comfortable doing since I don’t plan to live in a house this tiny for more than another year (at most) and there are few treasured things I don’t want to get rid of, but in the meantime moving them into storage is a good way to keep them from over-filling the space we currently have available.
I think I really only have to do maintenance for the next few days. I should get some disinfectant wipes for the bathroom, and try to get in the habit of wiping down the counter.
How long are we going to let this thread go? Should we start a new one, or just keep chugging with this?
So would I be. In fact, you might be best off NOT opening the washer, just send it through another cycle with just water. Then you can do the baking soda thing at that link.

OK, I did pretty much nothing today besides the dishes and bed. But you know what, that’s okay, because I spent all my time on my quilt and the blocks are all laid out on the floor and looking gorgeous! I’m not quite sure how I’m going to let this one go.
Oh, and I worked out and accomplished grocery shopping. Which was pretty good, seeing as how it was with both kids, and we were tired, and in an unfamiliar store so it took longer, and I wanted a bunch of weird ingredients so we could make pretend ancient Greek food, since we’re on ancient Greece just now. So–according to WhyNot’s new rule, yay me!
I did do all the regular bare-minimum stuff today, plus one load of laundry (stupid mini-washer), cooked, ate & cleaned low cal, high fiber (brown rice, zucchini, carrots, broccoli & little bitty bird boobs), assemble french toast parts for morning, and didn’t choke my boss, so now I’m going to plop my behind on my laundry-free couch and have a beer!
My weekend goals are to keep up with the “gotta do” list, wash, (dry, fold and PUT AWAY) socks, purge the 1996, '97, '98 & '99 files (no, I didn’t do it when we moved 8 months ago), and put this weeks shoes in the damn closet where they belong.
Yeah, Rah-rah, yay me. I’m still in awe of how much everyone else has accomplished in less than a month. Under sinks, making quilts, healing, decluttering offices, kids, jobs. Wow – you “slobs” are inspiring!
Hah!! It was the immovable stance on wearing shoes in the house that made me never really get into FlyLady as well! Screw that, I do NOT and will NOT wear shoes in the house (for one thing, it makes the floors dirtier!! But mostly, it makes me uncomfortable, and dammit, I want to be comfortable in my own house.)
Since I separated from my husband my housekeeping has been pretty good. I get a little cluttered during stressful times (major projects due in school, just coming home from travel, being sick, etc) but my kitchen is clean, my bed is always made, the bathrooms are clean, etc. There isn’t stuff on the floors except sometimes my son’s current K’Nex project or what have you.
My main issues are: laundry (I need to get rid of a bunch of stuff… I just literally do not have enough space to put away all of my clothes), filing (I love the tub idea… I almost NEVER have to go back and look for an old bill, so why take the time and stress to be THAT organized?? A tub I could do, though!) and keeping my dining room table cleared off. I use it as a depository for books, school work, my purse, and the mail… and I really need to quit doing that. Eating dinner on the couch is naughty and should be reserved for pizza/movie nights only. Oh, and floors. I am bad about mopping. I sweep multiple times per week, but I don’t wet mop as often as probably I should.
Well, my folks are coming over for dinner tonight so I’ll have to tidy up. Really and honestly, I am thrilled to tell you guys, in the kitchen and dining room all I have to do is tidy up - corral the stuff that escaped since last time (admittedly a lot) and vacuum. Less than one garbage bag’s worth of trash. I also need to clean the bathroom, which is good 'cause it really, really needs it. I’ll put dinner in the crock pot and not go to the driving range until I’ve done what needs doing around here. Even though it’s supposed to get up to, like 65 today and I have a lesson tomorrow and I haven’t practiced at all.
The load in the washer is bleachable. As soon as I hit “send” I promise I’m going in there, opening it at arms length, pouring some bleach in the little bleach thing, turning it on and running.
Oh, and taking it out when done. I once had to do it twice to a load of towels - forgot them, rewashed, forgot them again.
That’s the one good thing about coin-op machines in the basement. I CAN’T forget something in there that long, or one of my neighbors will move it for me!
Actually, it’s kind of sweet. In our building, coins are safe enough down there that standard protocol is to leave your dryer money in the dryer coin slot when you put your load to start in the washer. If some eager beaver makes it down there before you and needs the washer, she’ll throw it in the dryer and start it for you. I’ve moved a lot of my neighbors’ loads, but I’ve also had quite a few of mine finished for me. It’s so much nicer than cranky neighbors who resent each other for being “too slow” in the laundry room.
Still gotta fold it myself, though. Unless the lady from next door is having one of her OCD episodes again - then I hit the laundry jackpot and go downstairs to find my load dried AND folded and waiting for me neatly in my basket. I love OCD Lady.
Obviously, I need to figure out OCD Lady’s schedule and sneak my laundry down on her laundry day!
Can I borrow OCD lady? No, actually, that’s one thing I have no problem doing, is folding laundry as I pull it out of the dryer; then putting it away is a breeze. Alas, when Papa Tiger does the laundry, he just pulls it out and shakes it out and lays it on the bed, so I have it all to fold all at once. I much prefer folding it one load at a time. I guess I shouldn’t complain, though, since he’s otherwise amazing at doing laundry – has never ruined a single garment of mine, no matter how delicate. He’d make a good laundry slave.
Today I’m not sure what I’m going to do. Probably start sorting the yarn/fabric, and also do the second bathroom floor – there were enough hard water stains on the tub that by the time I finished getting that all off yesterday, I decided to finish the floor today. Yesterday I also did one fun thing, however – at the KMart, I found a “junk drawer organizer,” a plastic tray that fits into a drawer with a half-size sliding tray on top and bunches of little cubicles, so I organized all the stuff that normally lives in a jumbled pile on my desk into the organizer. It’s now sitting here where I can reach everything quickly and easily, but the pile in front of my monitor is gone… It may not be a standard desk accessory, but hey, whatever works, right?
Today is dusting and vacuuming day. The main job is cleaning up the kids’ room; I didn’t have them tidy up last night and it’s pretty trashed. And I won’t be able to vacuum (or dust) the schoolroom until I finish putting the quilt together–I’ve got the room locked right now so the kids can’t destroy my careful arrangement. DangerDad has promised to take them out on a daddy adventure (the hardware and fish stores, whee!) so I can get a lot of it done. Since I blithely scattered tiny fabric trimmings all over the floor, it really needs to be cleaned up…
I still have dishes from last night to do–I made borscht for dinner, which makes an enormous mess, since it uses the large saucepan, the large soup pot, the industrial grater, and the mixing bowl. And the pastry board. I washed more of the dishes than I usually do and consider that to be pretty good.
And tonight is date night, which we sorely need! I’m very much looking forward to that. And now, I’m going to go make waffles. Yum.
As soon as I come up from the laundry room, I set my timer for 30 minutes. When it rings, I go put the laundry in the dryer and then set it again for 40 minutes. Works like a charm.
