New! SDMB Slob Reform Club, January Resolution Edition

Definitely the boyfriend. There’s a LOT more residue in the bathroom that Papa Tigs uses almost exclusively compared to the one I use almost exclusively. Men just get toilets a LOT nastier. What I hate most? Having to clean in all the nooks and crannies around the base. No matter how good they think their aim is, it’s just never that good, you know?

Productive, but not exhausting weekend, for once!

Giant freakin marine has taken over the ironing and vacuuming. He puts funny creases in my shirts, and forgets to vacuum under furniture, but it’s better than me having to do it.

I have 3 days worth of meals in the freezer for the coming week, two more prepped & ready to assemble, the kitchen is clean, both bathrooms are Not Disgusting, there are clean sheets on the bed, and (ta-dah!) I have one completely empty file drawer.

Not that I know from personal experience - but light sandpaper sometimes works when bleach isn’t cutting it. Hypothetically, of course.

I need vacuum cleaner recommendations. Preferrably in the $100 or less range. I’m not buying a Dyson. I don’t care how well it cleans. I have better things to do with the money. But still, I need a better vaccum than the one I have - which just plain sucks, or more to the point, doesn’t.

I’ve got one of them there Hoover Windtunnel ones. They’re over $100, but I got mine on a really good sale weekend or something, plus I had a coupon. Mine’s bagless, which I love, and it does a really good job. Picks up styrofoam peanuts with no problem. I only use a few of the attachments, but the ones I use work well. I’d reccommend it.

I’ve got a Bissell upright, bagless, on which the canister pops out for walking around-type vacuuming. I think it cost $180, which is a bit beyond your budget, but it works really, really well – and I say that as someone with two large dogs and a cat who all shed nonstop. I’ve been very happy with it, obviously.

Today was a not-doing-much day. Which was just lovely. There may be something to that day of rest thing most major religions include; it certainly does make for a happier person to have a day off once in a while!

Light laundry was done on Friday. Saturday I was supposed to go to the supermarket but it was snowing, I don’t drive on the snow if it can be avoided so it turned into a grocery run. Dark laundry was done on Sunday.

All laundry was promptly folded when applicable and put away. The bed got made every day. Dishes are getting washed fast.

Last night when I was going to bed I was thinking once more about how the room’s furniture is sort of misplaced; the beds are quite distant to the nearest lamp or light switch, so you always have to open the bed, switch the light off and then go a-bumpin’ in the dark. I had a sudden inspiration about a way to rearrange the furniture that I think will work well; the sofa’s position is marked by the TV antenna but I don’t have a TV, so the sofa doesn’t have to be where it is. I can swap the sofa and the bed, then the bed will have a switch at its head. Will rearrange furniture today, after coming in from the French supermarket (took the car, today, instead of the train).

Shuffling sofas and beds and bookshelves counts as exercise, right? Must also sweefer and wash the sweefer’s cloth cover and the throw rug that I took off the floor.

If you aren’t the “everything HAS to be brand new” type, you could look up vacuum cleaner repair places. An awful lot of people end up not picking up their vacuums, and after a time, those places are willing to sell the orphans for way, way less than new. And often the repairs were something like replacing a drive belt, so it’s not like the vac was defective.

Anyway, it’s a good way to get a ‘premium’ machine for less than you’d pay for the bottomline type.

OK, a load of laundry is in the washer and the dishes are done. I’m going to put fresh sheets on the bed and do two more loads of wash, and that’s it for housework today; I’m planning on continuing the sewing orgy I had yesterday. My batik quilt only needs the final outer border, which is now ready to sew on, and I started another quilt (while the border fabric was in the wash to get out all the dye)–a simple stash burner. I love love love the fabrics I’m using and I think it will be gorgeous.

Also I’ll go the gym. Absolutely necessary, since I’m in PMS mode and a very light workout (a long time on the ellipticals, with only a little resistance) is what I need to get rid of all the tension that builds up in my muscles. If I don’t, I’ll wind up with a horrible headache and be unable to sew or in fact do anything at all. Maybe I can hit the fabric store afterwards to find a flannel backing for the batik quilt…

I like my purple Kenmore vacuum from Sears. It’s pretty average, but it works fine and wasn’t too expensive.

Was dizzy. Left work early. Did shopping (the carts are the kind you can lean on without them running away) but didn’t shuffle furniture. Furniture shall be shuffled today.

Today is a Day Off, which means sorting the socks, baking, and doing sundry other chores. I’ve got to clean out the fridge.

Drat. I think I have mending, too.

Nava, dizzy? That can be a bad thing. If you don’t already know the cause, I hope you will ask your doctor about it. Let the furniture sit where it is.
My goal for the day is another little baby step: we have a side board in the front room we use as ‘general storage.’ It has two drawers on top, and below that are swinging doors that hide a biiiiig cubbyhole. Today I shall do one of the drawers, and just possibly both.

The cubby hole scares me. I don’t think I’ve openened it for several years.

Well, I’ve actually kept up, for the most part. I’ve become a little less Nazish about having the kitchen spotless before bed, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’ve been cleaning it up in the morning instead, so it’s not staying filthy, but after dinner I’m “off” and can relax with the fam. I’m going to try cleaning it up tonight again, and see how it feels.

Still Sweep & Vac’ing everyday. Have to mop again today, it’s been about a week, I think. Stupid hardwood floors.

Still swish and swiping the bathroom everyday.

Still shining the sink every morning.

Still dusting the wood once or twice a week.

Still cleaning the mirrors and glass once or twice a week.

Still wearing lace-up shoes for at least some portion of the day.

I added straightening the baby’s room at bedtime and making our bed after WhyDad leaves for work to the routine a few days ago, and that’s going well.

One thing I haven’t done is to come up with a schedule, so some things may be getting done more than they need to while others go too long. OTOH, I’m terrible with authority, even my own, and the second something is down on paper, I want to rebel against it, even if I was the one that put it there. I think for now, I’m going to leave it at “hmm…think I’ll dust today” as it’s working so far.

Still have a mountain of laundry. [whine] It’s so haaaard to go outsiiiiide to get to the laundryroom when it’s snoooooowy and cooooold![/whine]

[hijack] Anyone know how to get a heat “stain” off of a dark wood coffee table? One of the kids put a hot plate on it, and it’s now white and splotchy. Grr. [/hijack]

I stayed home sick yesterday and was in bed for most of it. And my refrigerator died. So after the repairman comes tomorrow, I’ll be having a fridge-cleaning party. So…well, we did clean the kitchen before bed last night, so that’s something, anyway.

Nava, I hope you’re feeling better–I agree that dizziness is a bit worrying.

Wow, WhyNot, that’s amazing! I am so impressed!

I got my icky headache anyway, and went to bed, leaving the dishes to my husband. He ran the dishwasher but didn’t do any of the large stuff (grr). So I have a pile of dishes to do today. I’d like to do a general tidy today, esp. of the schoolroom, but still feel pretty bad–so we’ll see how it goes.

I ended up running an errand all afternoon with whiterabbit, so during my home time I only had time for work and some minor puttering. No plans to go anywhere today, so hopefully we can tackle this office. Or something. But I’ve been keeping up with the daily bedmaking/swishing/swiping/sink cleaning, so that alone is a huuuuge step for me.

I am now going to tackle the giant pile of dishes, which has been sitting there all day. Then I shall make taco soup for dinner.

This thread motivated me! I just de-mildewed the bathroom. The easy way = soak a sponge with Tilex Mildew Remover, wipe over the mildew, wait 5 minutes and it’s gone! The hard part was wiping the ceiling. Less than 10 minutes.

Recipe, please?

I’ve been keeping up with all the new good habits but haven’t added any others. Yet. I hate how PMS makes me tired in the evenings now. But it won’t last and I’ll be zooming around again once it’s past.

I did miss doing dishes last eve because I crashed on the couch but I seem to be truly reformed because now I get twitchy if it’s getting close to 10 and they’re not done yet.

I’m going to boil up my beets tonight so I can make salad with them tomorrow and maybe do the muffins tomorrow.

Yesterday I got too caught up in baking, and only did a little tidying and cleaned the fridge out (not the same thing as cleaning the fridge). Today I’m going to clean the kitchen thoroughly, and again declutter the living room.

I’m really going to start trying to wash all the dishes before bed so I can wake up to a clean sink.
