TubaDiva-- I finally got around to fixing up those two smileys I submitted a while back… They should be in your e-mail now. For anyone else who wants to see them: They’re a head with a lightbulb above it, and a portrait of Einstein. I can’t post them on the Web yet, but I can e-mail them to anyone who asks. ---

OK, I know that smileys are supposed to have a transparent background… I tried to do that with mine, and when I tested them locally, they worked… However, I heard from Jerry the tech genius that the backgrounds weren’t transparent, and now seeing them posted at [tshirts’ site](http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/illustrations/), I see that he’s correct. Can anyone perhaps explain how they became un-transparent, or better yet, fix them so that they are transparent and stay that way? Mine are the two at the top of the page, einstein and idea. Oh, and if anyone is actually kind enough to fix them, the background immediately behind Einstein’s hair should actually be white, not transparent, so as to provide contrast with the gray thread backgrounds. ---

The transparency is sometimes dropped by various packages such as Paint, or Imaging, and perhaps some email downloads, but is easily restored Microsoft Gif Animator, Microangelo, or most other gif animators. I thought they were really clever, by the way. ---

In most IRC programs, if you have a / at the beginning of a line, it’s interpreted as a command: /join #straightdope , for example, would open up the straightdope room. The problem comes when you’re trying to show a newbie what to type, and one solution (thought up by someone else) was to put in a color code for black on white background at the beginning (the default, anyway), so the / wasn’t at the beginning of the line anymore. This is just a variant on that idea. \*\* I guess that’s where the Einstein comes from? Your mentor? I’ve got a few more smilies on the drawing board, but won’t put them up until this weekend. ---

Well, not my direct mentor, at least… He died before I was born, and I figure that I’m of the third or fourth generation of relativists. He is a bit of an intellectual “father figure” to all physicists, though. By the way, thans for bumping this… I’ve been wondering about the status of the smilies, but I didn’t want to sound impatient. ---

So far as I know, unless there’s some other weird glitches messing them up, the optimized versions graciously posted by tshirts on his [web site](http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/illustrations/) ([einstein\_optimized.gif](http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/illustrations/einstein_optimized.gif) and [idea\_optimized.gif](http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/illustrations/idea_optimized.gif)) are good to go. I seem to be having a problem with smillies. Sometimes they appear and sometimes they don’t. Are there some rules or what. :confused do they have to be inserted in the middle of text:( or can they be used anywhere in the post:) any assistance would be appreciated. IANDTD (I Am Not Dear Tuba Diva) but I have seen the trouble you are having with smilies. You are just not being careful enough. You are forgetting to put the trailing **:** on the end of some of the smilies like \*\*:\*\ ***rolleyes:** :rolleyes: and \*\*:\*\ ***confused:** 😕 and you are using uppercase O instead of lowercase in \*\*:\*\ ***o** :o. You just need to hang around in here a little and practice and be more careful about the coding. Jim ---
