I could actually see myself voting for and actively actively supporting (i.e. donating $) someone like Kinzinger if it was a foregone conclusion a dem couldn’t win anyway. There is a place for principled conservatism in American democracy. It’s just too bad we don’t see it anymore, and haven’t in a long time. ---

I’m sure it has something to do with $$, i.e., trump making as much as possible or suffering as little loss of it as possible. ETA: Also, maybe he didn’t trust those uncouth thugs not to trash his personal stuff. Trashing the gummint’s stuff is okay. Or maybe Melania put her stiletto-heeled foot down and said, “NO FUCKING WAY are we letting those criminals in here!” ---

I’m going to be polite here. Not everyone can sing acapella. The singer had a good timber to her voice; each phrase kept to the same key. Her problem was in the transitions between the phrases. Well, until the end, then she just couldn’t find a key. I’m sure she’s a fine soloist with accompaniment. But, please, know your limitations, especially when you are going in front of a NATIONAL AUDIENCE! I’ve sang the anthem. Acapella. Very well. I hate hearing poor versions, or versions where the singer is obviously trying to show off their own voice (eg - Whitney Houston). I applaud anyone who tries, especially youths. I abhor professional events where it is done like crap. ---

I abhor professional events where it is done like crap. I agree with you. The SSB is a difficult song under the best of circumstances, and it’s easy to go astray when singing acappella. So for a high-profile national event, you have to make sure to pick someone who can do it. I have years of singing experience and I wouldn’t do it under those circumstances on my own. I don’t know whether the story that Ms. Sabol’s father is a major GOP donor is true, or whether they just wanted some young spark from the party to perform (she’s apparently a college freshman), but it did not come across well for her or for the organizers. Tbh, though, I’m not a big fan of the whole “soloist sings the anthem” thing anyway. It’s everyone’s anthem; for all these events they should just get a small brass band for accompaniment and make the attendees sing. ---

Yeah, but any time something like that happens, my wife elbows me if I try to sing along. I’ve sang for a number of youth events (and one boxing tournament). Most of the time, I say “Please join me in singing The National Anthem” ---
