Fortunately, the filibuster rule has been suspended for court appointments (otherwise Amy Covid Barrett would have been blocked by the Democrats last year), so if Breyer retires this or next year, Turtle will be slit up a treat. ---

Say a prayer every night for Ben Cardin (77), Sherrod Brown (69), Bob Casey (61), Maggie Hassan (63), Pat Leahy (81), Angus King (77), Joe Manchin (74), Ed Markey (75), Bernie Sanders (80), Jon Tester (64), Elizabeth Warren (72), and Chris Van Hollen (62). Those are the Democratic senators over age 60 from states with Republican governors. Throw in the senators from Georgia and Arizona as well if you want, though they’re younger. I’m neither an actuary nor a gerontologist, so I can’t give you odds on all of them making it through the current session, but if one of them dies in office, Mitch McConnell will be majority leader again, and then we’ll all have to start praying hard for Stephen Breyer. That’s how tenuous the Democratic hold on the Senate is. ---
